The Shar Pei was originally bred for fighting. It's skin was wrinking to give the other dog a disadvantage, and the fur at one time was not as soft as it is now. Another aide to fighting in the ring.
A person should take care to keep the folds of skin clean and a lot of bacteria and get trapped there.
