Germany signed a non-aggression treaty with Russia before Germany attacked Poland. Germany promised not to attack Russia. After Germany attacked and took over most of France, Hitler then violated the treaty and attacked Russia.
Russia (Soviet Union actually) and Germany were not exactly allies but they were neutral trading partners.
One of the Ironies of WW 2 was that Russian Trains bearing goods and material for Germany were passed up by the advancing German Army as it Attacked into Russia.

It varied. The German National Socialism was seen to some degree as a defense against the perceived threat of Communist Russia. But Ribbentrop negotiated a pact between Germany and Russia before the war began, which let Russia attack Poland from the east at the same time as Germany did from the west. This detente lasted until the Germans invaded Russia in 1941, or thereabouts.

1938 Hitler made a pact with Stalin of not attacking each other.
And in 1941 Hitler broke the agreement. Stalin couldn't believe the situation from the ground. Soviets were totally unprepared for the war. That's why Germans entered so deeply into Soviet's territory and that's why so many, about 20 millions, Soviets were killed. West liked Hitler's attack to the East since this relieved the pressure of the Western front. So help from the Allies was negligible. It took Soviets about one and a half year to recuperate and organize counteroffensive. The first victory was at Kurdsk about the end of 1942. Then Stalingrad. The rest is history. The Soviet's victory over the Nazis were the most glorious and the most just victory in the history of men.

Read the books of Winston Churchill, THE SECOND WORLD WAR.Will give you a great insight from beginning to end of the conflict. You will be surprised how the problem with Germany resembles the problem with Iran. Also how france & England could have prevented the war if only they made a steadfast stance against Hitler.Germany,Russia and france are allowing Iran & North Korea to obtain a Nuke. They have the power to make these two ,most dangerous countries, behave themselves. The entire Midle East will explode if Iran gets its way.

Nazism was fundamentally opposed to Communism, and the Brown Shirts routinely beat down German communists, either individuals or groups, even before they gained the government. But there was an uneasy truce, even before the Non-aggression Pact and many Luftwaffe pilots got early training in the U.S.S.R. Also, remember that the two fought on opposing sides in the Spanish Civil War. A truly schizophrenic mixture of ideology and practicality.

Germany and Russia were neither friends or enemies. But both of them have their expansionist agenda. Russia wanted to have the Balkans and so do Germany. Both of them have interests in oil-rich Romania, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Finland and Poland.
In 1939, they signed a mutual non-agression pact to avoid conflict with each other's expansionist interests. It includes a secret protocol that subdivided Europe into each other's sphere of influence. Most of Western Europe (including France, Holland, Belgium, Great Britain) will be Germany's sphere. Most of Eastern Europe (including the Balkans, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Finland, Estonia, Lithuania) will be Russia's sphere. This initially led to the partitioning of unfortunate Poland between them. Russia made a move to invade Finland (Russo-Finnish War) without German intervention. Germany got a free hand in invading France, Belgium, Denmark and Norway without Russian intervention. But eventually, this pact didn't last long because Germany invaded Russia on June 22, 1941.
Hitler, long before he came to power, while in prison (for a failed coup to overthrow the german Weimar Republic) wrote his book Mein Kampf. In this book he envisioned that the land of the Russians shall one day belong to Germany. He envisioned creating a "lebensraum" (living space) in the land of the Russians to be populated by the aryan Germans with the conquered Russians as serfs working on fields and households of German masters.
So Hitler's mind is already set in realising this dream from the start. Any agreement with Russia will only be for his convenience to buy more time, to be discarded as soon as he is ready to invade Russia.
By this, the eventual conflict between Germany and Russia is inevitable.

They signed a Mutual Non-Aggression Pact several years before the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union ... which, obviously, forced Russia into the war.

They weren't friends - but not enemies either. They signed a peace treaty prior to WWII, but Hitler later broke it after defeating France by invading Russia.
