I wouldn't worry about it before the ages of four to six (when permanent teeth come in), especially since most children tend to drop the habit around age four anyway.

Replace the "bad" behavior with a new one. I always let my kids have the pacifiar...that way I could take it away from him/her or "trade" for it. Too expensive to have surgery to remove a thumb just for sucking on it! lol Anyways, they do make a liquid out there that is specifically made for thumb suckers wishing to break the habit. Taste nasty and is FDA approved. Ask your ped or pharm. Btw, thumb sucking is a means of relaxation to a very young child. It sooths them. Find something else that may sooth him that uses the hand for which has the thumb that he sucks. Good luck!

start telling him that if he doesnt stop pretty soon it will start to turn black... remind him everyday for a while and if he doesnt believe you and you still want him to quit, at night when he is sleeping start to paint his thumb black, use shoepolish, start with small spots at first, increase them in size until he quits... if he changes to fingers do the same thing... :o)

reward them for not sucking on the finger and no rewads for when they do. Do not say you are rewarding them for that but they will figure it out and it goes away.
