Our six year old son has been in speech and math title 1 since he was 4, and doesnt seem to be progressing very well. He cannot even read 3 letter words at times. He can sound out SOME letters and sound out words but cannot put the sounds together to make the words. He sometimes guesses when he cannot get it. And when he doesnt understand the instructions or something like that he guesses. His teachers keep saying he will grow out of it, He cannot stay focused, and he can say a word over and over again and then all of the sudden forget the word. I dont understand this...does this sound familiar to anyone? I need to get him the help he needs if he needs it but im not sure if im over reacting?

I am an early childhood special education teacher. It is a possibility that some of his challenges may be developmental. BUT- I think your concern is important. It would be wise to have him placed in speech therapy, make sure he has a full assessment done, and explore other remedial programs to help him catch up. If the school is not willing to comply, it is against the law because your son obviously needs help. Please - do NOT give up. Your son deserves to learn whether his current teachers think so or not. You should overreact- that's the only way to get things accomplished now. Good luck!

I know whatca mean.My step son who is 6 years old and in first grade lives with me and his dad and he has problem counting to 5,does not know the alphabet, can't read words or spell words. When we ask him questions he don't answer the question he just repeats one or two of the words from the question. When we ask him why he did something(like hitting his brothers)he says cause and if we say cause why he says I hit them but don't really give an answer. He don't know how to tie his shoes, don't wash himself right when he takes a shower. And when we try and work with him on stuff he has not intrest in trying or wanting to try or learn. He doe not talk clearly at all and is very hard to understand. He is in Speech,Resource, and in English Language Learners. He is hispanic and they have him labled as a non english speaking student but he don't speak spanish. Also he was in Preschool,Headstart, Summer School and Kindergarten but what has he learned. His teachers also say with the extra help he will catch up but his biological mother used drugs when she was pregant with him and I just wonder if he has brain damage or something.

well all I can say is that you either keep at it and at the teachers and what they are doing to help him or pull him and put him in a private or charter school or homeschooling him. my son (7 1/2 second grade) was put in speech in kgd and title one first part of first grade. and did not seem to progress. was sent on to 2nd grade(once they are tagged with having a learning disability they can not hold them back in school)
had a meeting with his title 1 teacher end of Nov found out he is still learning at kgd level. only told me exact level of his learning because we were moving. that is also when I found out they can not hold back what they say is a special needs learner.
I am now home schooling using the child directive type.

I put one of my boys in the math class, and one in the speech class, and saw results right away. You might take him to his Dr. and talk about it to him. It sounds like he has ADHD, or ADD. He may also need his eyes checked by a Dr. that specializes in kids. Eye sight is a big problem with learning. He may also just have a hard time learning. In any case, talk to his Dr.

I would have him checked for ADD and have his ears tested. My brother, now 35, when he was in first grade had the same problem. We found out he needed to have tubes put in his ears because he could not understand the pronounciation of the words which in turn made him not want to read. I would get those checked out.

I have a speech and learning disability myself and you need to put him in some special classes to help him and with talking and writing. speech therapy will help him for the whole time he is in school. I have done better with my lesson
