manhattan is a borough of nyc
but we new yorkers refer to manhattan as nyc even though there are 4 other boroughs that make up nyc
evn when mailing a letter you address it as bronx ny
queens ny
brooklyn ny
staten island ny (which is also known as richmond county but rarely used)
but letters to manhattan are always addressed new york ny as it is the heart of the city

Time Square is in Mid-town Manhattan, a part of New York City. I like to think Manhattan is New York City and the other boroughs are not part of NYC, but their actual names, like Brooklyn, NY or Bronx, NY....not Bronx, NYC, NY. But, Manhattan is New York City in the state of New York.

most people call Manhattan "The City." Although NYC iscomprised of all 5 boroughs (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island) most people from outside of New York think of Manhattan as all of NYC.
