I have a project for liturature, and my partner is my best friend. For some reason we decided to do a research report on a disability, and we also decided to research muteness because it interests us the most. Now, right now we are still researching, but we just keep getting the same things over and over again, no matter where we look. Can anyone help me and give me some information?

Many things can cause muteness, but the better words to search under would be communication and language disorders. Here are some causes that may cause an inability or a loss of spoken language: stroke, CP, autism, hearing loss, hysterical mutism, MS, throat cancer, vocal cord paralysis, traumatic brain injury. There are many causes and the degree of the communication disorder varies. In many cases, there are alternative/non-verbal ways to communicate. Or, sometimes the mutism can be corrected.

To add to Jesse's answer, there is a condition known as elective mutism, as well.
