What makes you think that the holocaust wasn't symbolic? The entire bible is set up to be read as a historical account coupled in with devine revelation. There are certain parts of the bible that are symbolical, but most of those are quite obvious as when it says "and Jesus spoke in parables and said..."

(OT)
In Aramaic culture, they have an awareness that God is omnipotent and does not have a body (that would be a limitation). So they begin metaphorical stories with the 'flag' (like our 'once upon a time' flag) having God in a body doing something in a very limited way - - - sitting on a rock to sew together animal skins to cloth Adam and Eve, riding on a horse, etc.
They also use phrases like the '_____ of God' not to indicate that God Himself made the thing, but that it was/is the best version of those kinds of things that humans could ever make themselves. 'A carpet made by the hand of God' is not asserted to actually have been made by God, but is the finest kind available. Thus, when they assert that these commandments were written by the finger of God.......

(NT)
Whenever Jesus (or whomever is speaking) says: 'like', or 'as if', or words to the same effect, what follows will be a metaphor or a parable.

In many cases it is symbolic, and the first step in valid exegesis is knowing what is symbolic and what is meant to be taken literally. Many of the misinterpretations and resulting false beliefs so rampant in Protestantism are the result of the inability to make such a distinction accurately.
