I have had ADHD, S.A.D (Seasonal affective disorder), & Bi-polar my whole life... When I was in school I had 2 be on the IEP (individualized education Plan)... They put me in Intensity Level 5 in school (smaller classes)... I was on Ritalin but that made me like a zombie... and then they put me on Adderal & that helped me alot...
There r certain things that would set someone with ADHD off & cause them 2 be bounceing off the walls:
1. The smell of bleach
2. Don't let your child drink anything with Red 40 in it (example: Hawaiian Punch or fruit punch)
3. any type of Milk (including white/regular milk) also sets a person with ADHD off
4. And of course limit Chocolate intake
For someone that has ADHD yes Depression does follow it... My godson is 6 and he was diagnosed a year ago with ADHD & about a month ago he has just been diagnosed as also having bi-polar... So it is really common for a child that does have ADHD to be bounceing off the wall one minute & to be really sad, down, & depress the next minute...
Please be careful though with medications... My friend just lost her Little 17 year old sister last year dued to suicide... She was taking Ritalin when she killed herself... Doctors are saying that it's the meds that caused her 2 kill herself...
Hope this helps & please feel free 2 e-mail me if you have any more questions or problems...

My middle child, a son - now 23 - was diagnosed as ADHD. However, that was back in the day when everyone was ADHD - what he really had was CAPD (Central Auditory Processing Disorder) and was gifted in Art/Music. He was depressed as well and withdrew. Now, let me throw you a curve ball. My youngest son, now 12, his 4th grade teacher back when (who was in no position to be making this type of call) suggested that he was ADHD. Because I already had experience, I instinctively knew this wasn't the case - instead, I had his IQ tested - and lo and behold, he scored well into the gifted area - many times, kids are misdiagnosed with ADHD when they are actually gifted. Gifted children present sometimes as if they have ADHD. They need to be constantly challenged because they process information quickly - if they get bored, they act out. My son was dubbed class clown in Kindergarten - need I say more. Have you considered testing his IQ? (Public schools by law have to identify the gifted and that means provided you and your child with someone who is qualified in this area). Just my thoughts. Good luck!

ADHD is a real and treatable condition. Yes, you can get depressed and withdraw. I have it, have had it all my life. I have dealt with bouts of depression all my life (I'm 42 now). When I was about your son's age I was so down I wanted to die. Please get your son some counseling if you can. I know this can be hard if insurance denies it. Then educate yourself. A good book to start with is YOU MEAN I'M NOT LAZY, CRAZY, OR STUPID. Unfortunately I don't remember who the author is. There are also some other good books about this I really wish I could remember which ones they are (I just moved and my books are still packed). Go to your public library and ask the librian for help.
You can also search on the web for info .
When you have a child with ADHD you have to become an advocate for your child, to help him get the help he needs.
Some signs of ADHD are: anxiety, lack of attention, lack of focus, yes withdrawal because he is different from other kids, sometimes agression, butting into conversations, lack of self observation(to me this is a big one), being unaware of how loud he is, can't sit still for very long, the list can go on and on.
However, like I said there is hope. My daughter has ADHD so bad that she has an IEP (individualized education Plan) at school. Her IEP calls for her to be in a smaller class during part of the day and then for subjects she does okay in, she goes to the regular class. Her IEP also allows her to see a behavior specialist, a school counselor and other things to help her in school. There really is too much to try to put in this message. I wrote a research paper about this when I was in collage. Too, bad I can't find it, because it's got the references you could use.
A good support organization is CHADD their website is: www.chadd.org. They have a magazine too. www.concerta.net has a free infromational DVD about ADHD. Concerta is also one of the meds used to treat ADHD and ADD.
The school has a responsibility to help you with this. There are several laws that require them to make certain allowance for kids with disablilties. ADHD is one of them. My prayers are with you. Good luck.
