I am looking for a gift for my Dad, but I am not sure which book would be a good choice. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What does he do? Mechanical engineering is a big field. I like Mechanics of Materials by Ferdinand P. Beer and E. Russell Johnston, Jr. I have the 3rd edition, but I think it's up to the 4th now. Also, Vector Mechanics for Engineers (Statics and Dynamics) were good and were by the same authors, but these are both text books and not reference books. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
Good luck!

"good" and "cheap" won't be in the same description if you are talking new. Now if you can find them used, cheap might come into play.

Mark's Standard Handbook for Mechanical Engineers
Mechanical Engineers' Handbook (Edited by: Kutz, Myer) John Wiley & Sons
Engineering Formulas (Gieck & Gieck)
Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual (Lindeburg)

Marks' Standard Handbook for Engineers. This has everything you will need....but if it is for your dad, and he is an Engineer...he likely already has one on his desk. You'd better check.

But if you have ever bought a good technical book, you will understand that there are no cheap ones.

I like the Machinery's Handbook. You're not going to find any steam tables in there, but for mechanical and structural/material guidance, its pretty good.

When I took my PE exam, I only had 3 references with me - Machinery's Handbook was one of them.

I passed, so - can't be too bad.
