All of the verses you've been given are great!
The guy who claims that "having a Bible verse thrown at you" doesn't help, is only partially right. Actually, God's Word is intended to provide solace and comfort. Throwing it at someone, however, is not the way to get the message accross.
You might try praying with your friend, and pointing out that God's Word contains good advice and comfort for him.

I am a minister and despite what most Christians believe, having a bible verse thrown at you when you are hurting is not very helpful.
Check out Proverbs 25:20

i like one out of palms. I believe its psalms 107:1 but i could be wrong. I dont have my bible with me at the moment or i could check it. It talks about how great god is. I would use verses like that. You can use the one out of 1corithians about hope faith and love. (Now these three remain:Hope , faith, and love. Love is most important. Love is patient, love is kind...)
Also, footsteps in the sand is good. The part where God says "The places where there are one set of footprints are the places i carried you" or something like that. But that lets him know God is always there. Tell him God loves to talk =)

Peace, my christian friend

"Therefore, I remind you to keep ablaze the gift of God that is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of fearfulness, but one of power, love and sound judgement." (2Timothy 1:6,7)

"What then are we to say about those things? If God is for us, who is against us? He did not even spare His own Son, but offered Him up for us all, how will He not also with Him grant us everything?" (Romans 8:31,32)

"Haven't I commanded you: be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you whereever you go." (Joshua 1:9)

Here are just some of many, and let me tell you I admire you for doing this to help your friend. May God bless you both!!

"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." - Romans 8:38-39

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." - Jeremiah 29:11

These are 2 of my favourites. Hope they help. God bless!

1Co 2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

Isa 43:2 When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.
