So far there as been no state that as ban pits they leave it up to the cities. You would think with over 5 million pit bulls in this country, peopl would see that it is not the breed that the troble is with but the a**hole owners. So instead of passing laws to adderess the really problem they just put a bandaid on it and thinks it going away.
Banning pit-bull-type dogs is not the answer ["Rein them in before they attack again," editorial, Nov. 9]. In 1991 when the United Kingdom banned pit bulls it was found that even after the pit bull population steeply declined, the number dog bite incidents remained the same. Why? The number of irresponsible dog owners stayed the same. The fact is that dog bites rarely happen randomly to people walking down the street. Most dog bites (77 percent) happen to a family member or a friend. The majority of bites are perpetrated by un-neutered male dogs.
What breed will these owners next chose and make the new bad breed that as to be bann. Maybe it will be the one you all love and then you well lose your pet and want to cry about it. Wake up people this is a attack on our right to own pets. Start fighting now before your dog is taken from you and put down becasue of the kind of breed it is.

I live in Florida and there is no State ban on the Pit Bull, but there are a few city bans and pit bull regulations like making sure your dog is registered. And for those who do no research but have a lot to say, I suggest that you go read a book so you don't sound so ignorant because ignorance is contagious.

Lonewolf: You do realize that BOXERS, MASTIFFS, and many other breed have very similar and intertwining histories, so if your theory as to Why pit bull are "untrustable" should then be applied to every other breed that has been bred to kill something...what...that is EVERY BREED, the original purpose of dogs was to aid in hunts, therefore KILLING living things. Pit bulls in the fighting ring were NOT human aggressive, if they were they were killed due to rules in the fight ring...sadly todays fighting dogs are not as well culled and they are starved and beaten into fighting....(its a trained behavior....why they have what are called bait dogs, they are used to train the fighters to fight)
People like you who know nothing, but think you do, are very sad to me...you should do the necessary research before opening your mouth. I use to believe very similar things, until I myself did the research and now I feel horrible for ever thinking the things I did.
As far as only a small % being trustable....how do you explain the population vs attack ratio for breeds....CDC did this study a few years back based solely on AKC/UKC registered dogs, Not included mixed or non registered dogs.
The percentage of "pit bulls" (which is really 3+ differnet breeds but are put into a category together because they look similar) who attacked compared to the registered population was 0.0012%.....WOW Thats a HUGE percentage....
The percentage of Cocker Spaniels......0.0034%.....geez thats more...thos little buggers.......
The percentage of Labrador Retrievers.....0.0014%....gosh thats almost the same as "pit bulls" and this only includes 1 breed....scary if you ask me.
The percentage of Golden Retrievers....0.0007%....I love these guys...but all dogs can attack...this should be enough to show that.....
It all depends on the situation....They are all dogs, and are all subject to the same environmental stimuli and reactions.
I cant tell you how many stories I have heard of where they yelled from the roof tops that "PIT BULL" Attacks.....come to find out the dog wasn't even close, and nothing is ever corrected...this is the reason people like lonewolf are ignorant....they believe everything they hear on TV!!!
As far as what states ban pit bulls....and yes there are whole states than have them banned.....the AKC has a great educations section of their website that confronts breeds specific legislation around the country.....

There are no entire states that have breed bans on pit bull type dogs (American Staffordshire Terriers, American Pit Bull Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, etc.), but the providence of Ontario has a providence-wide ban on them. Ohio used to have one, but their ban was determined unconstitutional in a court of law.
Most breed bans call for dogs that may potentially look or be APBTs, ASTs, etc. This can include any number of dogs, including Presas, Dogos, Boxer mixes, and any other mixed breed dog that has the characteristics.
To follow up on areas that have breed bans, I recommend the following sites, even though they may not all be entirely accurate. You may have to check your local municipality to find out for sure if there are limitations or bans.

You can do a google search on Breed Specific Legisiation and find *many* more sites.

For starters I have two pitbulls, one of which was rescued from a very abusive owner who starved her and beat her and she is the sweetest thing. I trust her more with my kids then my mix breed. Second, pits are illegal in certain counties within each state so you would have to find out about whichever counties' pet laws.
Its interesting how many breeds have the "bull" features take a look for yourselves.

I love dogs, but pit bulls have a bad history, and cannot be trusted, and on a very small percentage some might be nice, but overall, society does not need them........
