There are only 26 letters in the English alphabet and double that in Devengari - does anyone have any tips for learning Hindi with correct grammer and pronunciation?

I am very shy and confidence is my main barrier - i dont want to get laughed at.

I'm learning hindi too! The International phonetic alphabet is based on the devenagri scrpt. You might try learning about that. I have a degree in linguistics so it's easy to understand that Devenagri is arranged by place of articulation, or place where sound is made in your mouth. The sounds start in the back and move to the front. Once you start using Devenagri it is really easy.

Also, I love hindi movies and music and there is so much available to download.

I found a teacher who teaches Hindi locally. I don't learn as well without a real person to explain to me. Start by evesdropping. Listen and see how much you understand. I just listened to a couple of conversations at lunchtime because they didn't think I could understand. (they were short and not personal). There is a great book, teach yourself Hindi script by Snell. That's a good introduction to writing.

Good luck. Hindi is a beautiful language and it's an indo-european language, so it's not super hard for native English speakers.
