You use two very big words there: "can't" and "reject".
After I became a Christian, I did not really know for sure how to understand the first chapters in Genesis. I wondered for some time about the idea of theistic evolution. Eventually, I came to the position that by rejecting a literal Adam and Eve and the fall of man, I would have difficulty with a lot of New Testament teaching: "By one man sin came into the world, and with sin, death" In romans 5, for example. And in the same way , by one man life came into the world through Jesus Christ, the second Adam.
So I came to the conclusion that I should take the story of the fall of man in the Garden of Eden literally. But that was a process of a few years. I was a Christian during those few years.
That's why I say "can't" is a pretty big word.
That's like some moral issues. Instead of asking if God, or the Bible, seems to disapprove of something. people ask: "Will you go to hell if... " which is really a whole other question.

To find out what it takes to be a true Christian, go to the source. Check out what Christ himself said in John, chapter 3, for instance.
And, by the way, Jesus accepted the story of the Garden of Eden and the fall of man, so it is good enough for me!

The basis of Christianity is what is found in the Bible and that is where the story of the Garden of Eden and the fall of man came from. I think the real question is can you be saved (going to Heaven) if you reject these stories? Answer is yes. You only need to believe that Jesus Christ is your Savior and that he died for your sins.

Some Christians take certain elements of the strory of Adam and Eve figuratively. However, the essence of the story - that man disobeyed God and fell from grace is the very reason for the coming of Jesus Christ. If Adam and Eve had not sinned, the human race would not have needed a Savior.

It is taught that way in the Bible. To be a Christian you must believe the Bible is a True account of the life of the Earth and Man. The way the question is asked the answer is True, You can't be a Christian if you do not believe the Bible. navysonofga

True, you cannot be a proper Christian, because the original sin of Adam and Eve is central to the saving sacrifice of Jesus. Jesus by His death on the Cross restored eternal life to the whole human race.
The Cross represents the new tree of life. Access to the original tree of life was withdrawn from Adam and Eve and all humans because of their sin.
The Bible makes it clear that the original Creation was perfect. It was original sin that set in motion the entropy we now see in the natural world with decay, disasters, death and corruption. i.e. the once perfect universe is now running down, and will eventually end.
It is important to note that there was no death of any creatures before the sin of Adam and Eve. All animals were vegetarian and humans ate only fruit. It was their sin that brought death into the world. If you believe in evolution you have to deny all this and believe that there were hundreds of millions of years of death, disease, killing and destruction before even humans arrived on Earth. In other words you have to believe that God made a horrible and imperfect universe, even though the Bible says that God saw the Creation was good.

uh....being christian means believing in christ as the saviour. The garden of eden/fall of man story is part of the old testament. Jewish people and muslims also have the same story in their religious texts.

The basics for being a christian would be to follow the Ten Commandments leaniantly, and to follow Jesus's example. The stories provide deep meaning if you think about them. You cannot ever understand the true meaning of being religious if you take the Bible literally.

False.
Your mind can 'know' or 'believe' almost anything, so long as you accept 7 things:
(1)There is a God, who is Infinite, Omniscient, and Omnipotent.
(2)Originally, the only way to be able to communicate with God was if your soul was clean of sin, which required some kind of death for each sin.
(3) To ennable some people to communicate with Him, God allowed animals to be sacrificed, in just the right situation, to pay for a person's sin.
(4) God caused a person to be born who would always be in direct communication with Him, who would live a life in such a way that everyone would be shown how to always be in direct communication with Him, and who would die in order to pay the blood-debt of all sin forevermore, so that those whose bodies die need not have their spirits destroyed.
(5) That man (Jesus) 's spirit waits at every human heart, knocking and waiting to be let in.
(6) When you are ready for Jesus to rule your life from the throne of your heart, invite him in, and get ready to start doing as he did.
(7) Pay attention to all of Jesus's teachings and actions. Be aware that there are many who have watered down his messages and will want your participation, don't resist, but don't be afraid to allow Jesus within your heart to speak out, and be sure and allow YHVH (God) to speak thru you; expecting to be persecuted, stoned, whipped, reviled, hated, tortured in the attempt to get you to recant or believe otherwise, and when all of that doesn't work, they'll kill you.
If you know or believe things that are false or inappropriate, once Jesus has mounted the throne of your heart and starts riding your life, he'll let you know.

True. You need to have a -reason- for God to save humankind. If humans didn't sin at the Fall, then why does Jesus need to die for us? That is one of the central things necessary to be a Christian; you have to come to the realization that you are a sinner and need someone to save you from the consequences of your sin. When you accept Jesus as the one who saves us from God's justice and punishment, and confess your sins to God, you have become a Christian.
What remains after you have been saved is to live as if the Holy Spirit really was in you.
