A prophet of God. As one of Israel's foremost prophets, he displayed what may seem like superhuman courage. Yet, the Bible assures us that "Elijah was a man with feelings like ours." (James 5:17)
In Bible times the prophet Elijah reached a low point in his life. He said to Jehovah: "Your prophets they have killed with the sword, so that I only am left." Yes, Elijah felt totally alone—and not without reason. A great many of his fellow prophets had been killed. A death threat was hanging over his own head, and he was on the run for his life. But was he truly alone? No. Jehovah let him know that there were some 7,000 loyal people who, like him, were faithfully trying to serve the true God in those dark times

Elijah was a prophet in Israel and later Judah from around 940-913 B.C.E. Later Elijah's name was used in Malachai 4:5, 6 to symbolize John the Baptist, as John would do a work similar to Elijah's, that of turning sincere Israelites toward repentence.

Elijah was a prophet of God. He was usually sent when God wanted to let someone(usually a king) that he was about to be put under condemnation by God, for sins he had committed. Elijah was also the only MORTAL who was taken into heaven without dying.

Elijah was a prophet who was taken up to Heaven in a flaming, flying chariot (thus he's the only living person to go to Heaven). It is believed that he will be brought back to Earth one day to announce the coming of the Messiah.

One of the foremost prophets of Israel. Evidently his home was in Tishbeh, thought by some to be a village in the land of Gilead, E of the Jordan River. (1Ki 17:1) He started his long career as prophet in Israel during the reign of King Ahab, who began to rule about 940Â B.C.E., and continued during the reign of Ahab’s son Ahaziah (began c. 919Â B.C.E.). (1Ki 22:51) The last time he is mentioned as serving as a prophet (this time for Judah) is toward the end of the eight-year reign of King Jehoram of Judah, which rule started in 913Â B.C.E.—2Ch 21:12-15; 2Ki 8:16.

Elijah lived in the northern kingdom of Israel during the ninth century B.C. during the reign of Ahab and Jezebel. Elijah worked miracles such as restoring a dead boy to life. He opposed the worship of the gods Baal and Astarte. During a contest with the prophets of Baal at Mount Carmel he called down fire from heaven to show God's power. After the slaying of the priests of Baal he fled to Mount Horeb (Sinai) where God commanded him to foment a revolt in Israel. After he chose Elisha to be his successor, a fiery chariot appeared and he was taken to heaven by a whirlwind
Elijah which means ``God is God" was called Elias in New Testament (Matthew 17:3). Elijah was a Tishbite of Gilead; he appears suddenly; is fed by ravens; restores the widow's son, (1 Kings 17:1-24); invokes fire on the prophets of Baal, (1 Kings 18:17-40); anoints Hazael, Jehu, and Elisha (1 Kings 19); denounces Ahab and Jezebel, 1 Kings 21:17-24); is translated in a chariot of fire (2 Kings 2); reappears on the mount of Transfiguration (Luke 9:28-35).
Elijah lived in a time when there was a drought in Israel. Israel was then ruled by a wicked King Ahab and his wife Queen Jezebel who lead the people into worshiping the god Baal. Elijah whose name means "Yahweh is my God" did many great things. He is probably best known for his confrontation with the hundreds of prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel.
From this story we can easily see that both Elijah and God had a sense of humor for they use the very things that Baal was known for to confound them with. Baal was the god of nature, fertility and rain. It is easy to imagine him with a slight grin on his face as he chided the prophets of Baal to call down fire from heaven, and then proceeded to pour water on his sacrifice before praying to God who consumed it with fire.
Elijah was just one man, yet God used him to teach a lesson to the people of Israel: "How long will you hesitate between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him." His close walk with God eventually allowed him to be one of the very few who did not face death here on Earth as he was "taken up".
The name Elijah was also used for the Son of Harim (Ezekiel 10:21).
Key Verses they are mentioned in:
I Kings 17, 18; II Kings 2
Character Strengths to copy:
Elijah had incredible faith. He was also a man of action.
Character Weaknesses to Avoid:
At times it appears that Elijah got depressed and lacked confidence.
Lessons we can learn:
From Elijah we can learn that God honors those who seek and follow Him.
