You're all just saying it's insulting because it's insulting. What is so bad about it? Is god just a pussy?

Well, besides the obvious as listed in the 10 commandments, there is a modern answer as to why such language is offensive both to atheists and whoever.

The following is an excerpt from one of my books on Humor, jokes, etcetera.

Profanity versus Vulgarity:

Profanity is disrespect directed toward a deity. It announces that God is unworthy of your respect. It says, "Do not apply God's principles of harmony". The very expression "G*d Damn" means "G*d is worthless". Profanity is a habit among some people; its user is usually naive, un-intending, or un-aware of the message it is sending.
90% of all Americans believe in God. The other 10 percent include some news reporters, radio talk-show hosts, Psychiatrists, astronomers, archeologists, fanatical evolutionists, and other "whatevers" of this little world.
In a nutshell: When telling a story/joke, do not use God's name in vain. It would be offensive and distractive. (There is nothing funny about being offended.)

Fortunately for us, no-one knows how to do it anymore.

First of all, "God" is not God's name, it is His title.
So any swearing with 'God' in it is not taking His name in vain.

If you knew Ancient Hebrew (and no-one really does anymore), and you knew completely what YHVH meant, and you knew that pronouncing it correctly would bring all of YHVH's attention onto you and your situation (often with amazingly intense results, like if you're prophet and some kids are making fun of you, bears coming out and ripping the kids to shreds) - - - but doing it when the situation is inappropriate ( in vain) causes huge disasters.

Aren't you glad it's nearly impossible nowadays?

God is so Great. He loves us and when someone say's the Lord's name in vain it's insulting him and he does not deserve that!

Actually, taking the Lord's name in vain doesn't mean saying "OH MY GOD!" or "JESUS CHRIST!" but rather doing evil in God's name or claiming that God wants you to do evil. A classic example is when Osama Bin Laden bombed the WTC because he believed he was killing Americans in God's name.

I think it is wrong for me to take "the lords name in vain" in the sense supposed "cursing".But if my atheist friend wants to exclaim "Jesus' tit s!!!" when he sees something odd,I could really care less.
In the sense of becoming a Christian and then not making anything of it....why wouldn't that be bad?

I would be offended if someone used my name profanely or in an offensive way. So I can just imagine how God, whose name is above every other name, would be enraged at someone who did that.

because it said in the bible not to take Gods name in vain. and if u were smart then u would start listening to the bible. because one day every knee will bow and and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

They are wierd. They think it's offensive to say Mary wasn't a virgin as if she was a virgin her whole life or something. Who cares if she had a little sex. Most people have had a lot of it.
