In my town there would be no soup kitchen for the homeless and the shelters are run by Christian organization as well. We also have a organization Asheville Buncombe Christian Ministries that help with providing heating assistance and warm clothing and getting homeless into apartments.
I think we as Christians could change that view if we focused more on God and obtaining His attributes and less on problems.

Our religious leaders would call for burning and smashing Elton John LPs, CDs, and 45s. Been there, done that, seen a lot of smashed Beatles 45s.

For Sir Elton's opinion to be taken seriously, he must have demonstrated expertise in the area in which he is opining. In this case, he has no expertise and hence, no standing. His opinions are thus his own and best kept to himself.

If it is true that he said that, then he is sick and should be banned himself from America. Because he is against religious freedom. Now if he is against religion having special priviledges, and feels that their tax exempt status is wrong, he has a right to his opinion - even if he is wrong about that. But that would be different from outright banning organised religions. That's what USSR did.
