There are a few things you can do. The first one would be to feed him smaller portions spread out through the day. Or even give him 1/4 of his food at a time, make him wait 5 minutes, then give him another 1/4, wait.... so on.

You can also add a bit of water, not only does it slow them down but the water helps with digestion.

Or you can ge one of the tip-less bowls (mine are the stainless steel ones) and actually flip it over and feed him in that so that the food goes around in a circle around the center thing, its a smaller area to eat from and they cant take huge mouthfulls from it.
My shelties actually get their food in an upside down bowl with water, it really helps

I had two puppies that would scarf down a bowlful of food in about 13 seconds. Literally. There is a product on the market now that can help with this problem. It's called something like the Brake-Fast dog bowl, by Brake-fast LLC. It is specially designed to prevent GDV (Gastric Dilatation Voluvus) or bloating, and promotes slower eating, which can make your dog feel fuller. I'm pretty sure it's been vet tested, too, but you can find out more info by checking the site at www.brake-fast.net.

feed small amounts. Also, (and this works with gulping water also) Add a large rubber toy to the bowl. Be absolutely SURE it is not small enough for the dog to swallow!
I would NOT recommend taking the food away when he starts gulping. This will make him MORE anxious to eat. Leave him ALONE when he eats so he feels he doesn't HAVE to gulp in fear it will be taken from him.

A friend places two or three tennis balls in the bowl on top of the food. It slows the dog down, as she has to eat around the balls. My friend will also stand by as the dog eats and occasionally tell the dog "Back" so the dog steps back and takes a breath, then lets her eat again.

For some dogs, it is a matter of life or death to not gulp their food - you CAN do something about it.

If your dog is gulping it's food and there is no health issue involved IE vomiting or other end troubles, I wouldn't be concerned with it. However if you need the dog to slow down you can try putting the dog's kibble in treat dispensing toys..there only a few pieces fall out at a time and it'll drag out the time it takes for your dog to eat its meal..plus it keep them entertained.

Try feeding the same amount, but over more portions. If your dog is eating 3 cups per day, then give him 1 cup 3 times per day. He may just be waiting too long between meals therefore he's gulping it down quickly.

Spread his food over a wide area so he has to physically move to get to the next bit of food. This is easiest achieved with dried food which you can spread over the lawn or driveway.
