There are several changes you can make.
Depending on which operating system and file system you use, you may have a high amount of file fragmentation. This generally only applies to Microsoft Windows systems - Mac OS X and Linux systems do not suffer from high file fragmentation problems.
If you are using Microsoft Windows, then your system has probably been infected with "malware". Install and run something like superantispyware - http://www.superantispyware.com Mac OS X and Linux systems do not suffer from malware problems.
If you are using Microsoft Windows, then your registry might have become corrupted. Mac OS X and Linux systems do not suffer from registry problems. Use something like RegCompact.NET to compact a bloated registry, or CCleaner to fix registry problems.
You may be running a lot of programs that you do not need. Stop unnecessary services, or uninstall unused programs.

As far as I know, the only way to make a computer faster is to add more RAM, or update the processor. I would think additional software would only make the computer go slower because it would have more processes to go through.

it all depends on...
what you are using it for?
how old it is, and the age of software hardware etc.
you disk space used and available, and if you have any viruses or processes running that are not necessary.
or you can defragment your machine.
clean up your hardrive, back-up to an external harddrive.
or if you have money, buy a new machine. : )

best thing you can do is run a spyware program remove spyware, disable unused services in computer management, increase your page file size in advanced settings under performance in system properties, defragment the HD, clean up the desktop, add RAM, do all that and see if it helps..
