Well I'm no doc. but I'm pregnant myself and no one has ever told me 100% one way or the other with stretch marks! The genetics thing is a myth because for stretch marks, the fact of the matter is that every woman's body is different! Some women have more elasticity to their skin which means they may not suffer from stretch marks at all, and some have to start using the creams right away. It's important to keep your skin moisturized no matter what. If you're going to apply a lotion (which most women do anyway) it might as well be something that is known to prevent/reduce the appearance of stretch marks, right! I use the lotions I'll list below and I have a pretty good knowledge of skin products and benefits even outside of the pregnancy box. Cocoa Butter and Vitamin E (good for your skin no matter what) and Elastin/Collagen is your best bet. It may not completely prevent the marks, but it will definately benefit in reducing the appearance both during pregnancy and after birth. Elastin increases....Elasticity!!! :) or say the "stretchyness" of your skin, both for stretching out and shrinking back. Cocoa butter is hydrating, the more moisturized your skin is the more even your skins tone and texture will be. Remember a stretch mark is basically a scar, they vary in color, size, location, and even indentation. I had a growth spurt when I was a little younger (I'm only 22 now) and got some on my hips. I used lotions with the above listed ingredients and they went from a dark pink to a white'ish clear. I can still tell where they were but no one else can even see it unless they really look for it. Now, being pregnant and my belly growing pretty good I use Vaseline Intensive Care Cocoa Butter Deep Conditioning along with Palmer's Massage Lotion for Stretch Marks and I haven't seen anything yet. I have to especially focus on my belly button cause it was pierced and the thin skin that it went through is likely to mark up as I get bigger, but even that hasn't happened yet. I obviously recommend using the creams, better to be safe than sorry right. After all, it only takes a couple minutes to apply and if you try both kinds like I use and listed above then just pump some of each one in your hand a mix together, then apply...saving even more time. You could also use a body wash with these ingredients to increase your success with the dreaded marks as well! Make sure also to use creams on your theighs, hips and rear-end cause these areas can stretch too during pregnancy! AND REMEMBER this isn't an over-night remedy, the sooner you start the better off the results may be!

If have never found a cream that worked very well. Here's what I've found to work the best after trying many different creams. Find a hydrating lotion, anything as simple as baby lotion or even petroleum jelly (as long as you're not allergic) to lotions with complex formulas. Use it several times a day. A "jelly" time cream that stays on your skin without evaporating is best in order to give your skin time to drink it in. Use it as often as necessary. In addition to this, increase your dietary intake of vitamin E. A handful of fresh toasted, hulled sunflower seeds every day is all you need.

I also think that it is a gene factor and I was lucky enough not to get them too bad.
However, with my first pregnancy I used Cocoa Butter from The Body Shop - it was more for moisturizing my front, lower back and breasts.
I am now pregnant for a second time and went to The Body Shop yesterday and got some more.

Not useful at all!!
It's genetics that determines who and how many stretch marks you get! Sorry!

I used them and I look like someone set fire to my stomach. I was really small framed when I got pregnant and my skin stretched terribly.

It helps a little but won't get rid of them completley, only time will fade them.
