My fiance snores really loud sometimes. I mean..i love him so it doesnt bother me too much. But I am more worried about his health. Does this effect his health or anything? He sometimes snores sooo hard that he starts choking.. almost gagging. He also stops breathing sometimes for a few seconds at a time.. does anyone know how to stop this???

I agree, it sounds as if your fiance has obstructive sleep apnea. I wound't agree that this is imminently life-threatening, but it is something that a doctor can help with.

Is your fiance usually sleepy during the day? Has he ever fallen asleep at work or (god forbid) while driving? Is he a little on the heavier side? All of these things lead toward at diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea.

What it is is partial obstruction of the airway when you're asleep. The sounds are caused by turbulence of air flow in his throat. When you slip into deep sleep, your body becomes paralyzed except for the muscles of breathing. The tongue and floor of the mouth can lose muscle tone and fall back into the throat and obstruct the airway. This causes the pause in breathing which causes you to awaken out of deep sleep. The result is you get a poor night's sleep. If you're heavier or have a really thick neck, you're more likely to have problems. If he's heavier, losing some weight might help.

What most doctors will recommend to him is using a bipap machine. Bipap stands for for Bimodal Positive Airway Pressure. It's a mask that straps to the face and provides pressurized air. It overcomes the obstruction and allows for adequate oxygenation, even when in deep sleep.

If this sounds like what your husband has, he might benefit from seeing a doctor and getting set up with a bipap machine.

your boyfriend has obstructive sleep apnea. And yes, it leads to very serious health issues, it caused me to have a heart attack when I was 40. He needs to call his doctor and get a sleep study done...he will then be fitted for a cpap(continuous positive air pressure) machine, which will keep his airways open, stop his snoring, help him sleep ever so much better and be healthier all the way around. Don't wait, make him do it today.

He needs to have a sleep study done. He could have apnea which means he could be not breathing for extended periods during sleep, kinda dangerous! There is a machine that helps keep the airway open. Get him to the doc.

It is very likely that he has obstructive sleep apnea. This is a very serious medical condition that can even be life threatening. At the very least, it impairs the quality of life. Please drag him off to a doctor, and have him evaluated. Your life and his will be greatly improved. During my years of practice, I diagnosed more than one person with sleep apnea; these were people who had come to me for depression and other mental health issues. The sleep apnea turned out to be one of the major causes of their other problems.
I wish you good luck with this.

Sounds like sleep apnea. He really needs to see a doc for a sleep study for the appropriate treatment. It can cause heart failure if left untreated.

sleep apnea (sp?). I've got it. treatment is a biotch so I opted out and there's a good chance it'll kill me one day. make him sleep on his stomach, that helps.
