It will wash out some but in lab studies it has been proven that even if you boil or wash the item traces of e coli are still existent.

Only if it is on the surface can you wash it away. If it was ingested through water, it is in the entire plant and you must cook it to kill the e-coli.

The thing with spinach is long over and this thing with onions is false. They just said it has nothing to do with any kind of onions. And, yes, cooking does kill the e. coli.

No. It's not always on the surface of the food. Sometimes its IN the water that's used to feed the plants or animals.
"Among other known sources of infection are consumption of sprouts, lettuce, spinach, salami, unpasteurized milk and juice, and by swimming in or drinking sewage-contaminated water."
Yuk. Cooking won't remove it from plants either. They'd have to cook so long, they'd fall apart.

I don't think you can get rid of it just by washing it cause if that was the case then people wouldn't have gotten sick by eating it from taco Bell. Before it is distributed the vegetables are washed...twice. I'm pretty sure you have to cook it first to a certain degrees.

I know with the spinach it was in the plant the only way to "get rid" of it was to cook it.

try just wilting your spinach -- it has a great flavor not like cooked mushy nasty spinach. just drop it in a pot of boiling water and take it right back out. or put it in a hot fry pan with a little oil until it breaks down. add it handful by handful while its breaking down. i put it in orzo pasta with some tomato and garlic cooked for a couple mins. put a little lemon juice and olive oil on it. you will forget you ever ate spinach without cooking it.

Cooking will NOT kill e-coli. Just throw anything suspect away. If you try to eat something contaminated, you will be sorry. It's not worth it.
