I am a childcare provider and I overheard a parent bragging that she had just given her child a sippy cup with apple juice and alka-seltzer, claiming "He should go right to sleep" and winking her eye. Is this dangerous for children?

The two big problems with Alka-Seltzer is that it is dosed for adults and usually contain aspirin. She could be od'ing her kid on antihistamines, decongestants, pain relievers, and possibly other ingredients. There is no way to properly dose a small child with that kind of formulation. Also, kids shouldn't have aspirin. If the child is actually sick (flu, chicken pox), it may cause Reye Syndrome which usually involves permanent brain damage. Aspirin causes stomach bleeding even when given in normal doses. Most adults can handle the slight blood loss but some can't. At the high doses and with a child's tender stomach, the risks would be even greater!

Yes because the doses of medication in adult alka-seltzer can damage the child's liver. Report the mother. Children's benadryl or a similar gentle antihistamine to calm a fussy child is one thing. Adult doses of medication can quickly become harmful, and apparently, this mother is doing this alot.
