All caps was the only option for a long long time. Then in the late-eighties it became possible to use upper and lower case and usability studies found that people responded extremely well to it. It measured as being more friendly, easier to read, and more likely to get the desired attention.

All caps does not help impaired vision. Using a larger font and a blockish font (Ariel, not Italic Script for example) are 90 % more helpful than all caps.

You are not doing anything wrong in this sense but when writing in all capitals it means that you are mad at the person even yelling at the person. I went to post a question in all caps here and the yahoo computer said that was rude, it is just computer etiquette is all. Don't take it personal.

it is terrible to type in all caps? Why? Because it is hard to read.

We don't just read the letters, we read the shapes of words. I get frustrated when a door sign reads PULL or PUSH because the shape is the same .... a big rectangle. But look at the words with small caps:

Pull --- Tall, short, Tall, Tall

Push --- Tall, short, short, Tall

If I had the capability of uploading images I could better illustrate the difference in the shapes of those two words.

Reading a whole paragraph of tall letters is exhausting. Please oh please oh please don't do it.

There is nothing wrong with it, it just makes things harder to see & understand when you type a whole paragraph in caps. Caps are also used, commonly, to express anger or frustration. This makes things confusing and gives people the impression that you are yelling at them.

people in depression chat rooms and other mental health chats wont let people type in red or caps because it sends people over the edge. it can be kind of condescending when you type in caps. its almost like you are screaming at someone...plus its just very annoying because it takes up so much room.

*** i don't know who it was, but I think people have a little too much time on their hands sometimes when that's all they have to worry about. I mean, I think if you have a look at what people are typing u can generally tell if they're angry or not. just b/c it's all in caps doesn't mean anything as far as I'm concerned. but, garenteed someone'll make an issue of it.
