1) It's Tae Kwon Do= The Way of kicking & punching.
2) We emphasize kicking (about 80%).
3) We trace the roots back over 2000 years to a style called Tae Kyun=Focused Kicking.
4) It has been influenced by Shaolin Temple Boxing as well as Okinawan & Japanese Karate.
5) As Koreans started coming home when Japan was colapsing in WW II, many brought back ideas & training methods from Japan. They formed several schools or Kwans. At this time, several different names were used, primarily Karate & Tang Soo Do (way of the hands of Tang, from China). It hink that the name Tae Kwon Do was selected because it indicated the emphasis on foot techniques & sounds somewhat like Tae Kyun.
6) There are many reasons for using more foot techniques. The "official" reason was that your hands are valuable, you ned them to earn a living. In practice, your legs are longer & stronger than your arms, giving you more power & longer range. It is also better excercise as it burns more calories & develops balance & flexibility.
7) Many people only know the Olympic version which emphasizes speed at the cost of power, but that is not the tradition. Traditional TKD focuses on power.
I hope this answers your question.

like the guy above this answer, i have a problem with your spelling.
Tae Kwon Do, is well known for it's kicks. actually it's starting to reach a point of notoriousness on how much the style focuses only on kicking. also, it is well known for its point sparring, and people tends to make fun of the style for it. on top of that, it is critised for trying to hide the fact that it's based off of karate by saying Tae Kwon Do has thousands of years of history.
Although it has many bad critisisms when you meet a real Tae Kwon Do master, one finds that it's not really the art that is bad but some of the people that are representing it. and as a style it's not as bad as it seems. (although they should do something about using hands a bit more, evolve the art to have some kind of anti-grappling, and do something about giving out black belts too quickly)

Okay let's start this way. Japan did have some influence on Tae Kwon Do. More than likely AFTER the occupation of Korea by Japan. During this time Tae Kwon Do was forbidden by the Japanese to be practiced. More than likely they wanted to keep the Koreans suppressed to avoid any chance of a revolt. Before that, I don't know. I wasn't alive. I guess you will get different versions with different books.
Tae Kwon Do started to get organized in 1955. The WTF was started in 1962.
Now, Tae Kwon Do is easily more kicks than strikes. emphasizing on the flashy and very powerful kicks. The main reason for the power is the involvement of the hips in the techniques. Not EVERY one is Tae Kwon Do point spars. We spar full contact with pads. Even with the equipment injuries like broken bones, concussions and knock outs occur.
And by the way, we did (tried to) compete in an open tournament with Karate point sparring rules. We got too many deductions for too much contact.

Did you mean Tae Kwon Do?
Why don't you try searching it through answers.com or google.com? It's better than somebody explaining it to you(it's more accurate).
Tae Kwon Do is about balance which is focused on the lower parts of the body.

First off... for the LOVE OF GOD!!!!! ITS TAEKWONDO!
its almost all kicks... I would argue that they only throw punches in form and style to not be made fun of.
Taekwondo DOES NOT have thousands of years of history.... sorry guys... its a bastardization of Japanese Karate and others.... they only started to get really organized in the 70's... stop making it some original art.
