Nothing sporty though otherwise they will trash it. I had five accidents and two write off's when 18-20 yrs old, grew up and had zero accidents for next 20 years.

I would have to say keep it simple. What they want isn't want they always need. I would go for something like a cavalier like the answers below or a civic or something. There are several smaller than small cars on the market that are great for teens. A few other options are the Mazda 3 which is sporty and has nice features and not that expensive and dependable they handle well and you can get one new for about $16000. A Ford Focus is another good option. Either hatch back or not they are nice cars for teens. Just keep in mind that this is the car that they are going to be truly learning to drive in and will be put through a lot so it has to be dependable and safe!

I have a '93 Jeep Cherokee for sale. I'm asking $2,750.00. It's solid and dependable.

Seriously, an old reliable vehicle that only needs PLPD insurance is a good choice. The type is as dependent on the climate that you live in, as anything else. Where I live, 4wd is important. If it's warm where you are, a small old economy car is perfect.

Expect it to get recked. Cheep is good.

My advice is one that is not brand new and is not a sports car. Most teens get into accidents immediately following getting there license. Sports cars hike up your insurance and 10 times worse if the teen is a boy. Buy a beater. On that runs and is afffordable no more than $500 to $1000. I speak from experience. My first child totalled my husbands car and we had to pay for the one she hit and third child was hit by some one causing $7000 dollars damage and the car was never right after that.
And if you want the teen to appreciate their vehicle more, don't buy it for them. Let them work and buy it themselves.

A compact pickup truck is a good first vehicle. They are generally safe, and ride alittle higher than a car which improves road vision. The best part is there is only room for one passenger comfortably and one of the leading causes of teenage accidents is distractions from passengers. If you buy a 4WD version it is also much safer in bad road conditions. Good Luck

I would get something dependable but cute, like a newer VW Beetle. None the less, something compact and easy to drive, yet comfortable and dependable. Nothing brand new, maybe a few years old.
