is this the only thing Luther got right?

I'm not sure he got that right either. For all the people responding here, have you actually read Luther? I somehow doubt it. Wish I could find some of the Luther quotes I once collected. I was surprised, when I began reading his writings firsthand, to learn what an angry and hateful nutjob he was.

Luther's stance on reason was very much like that of Kierkegaard. They are reacting to a church culture that domesticated God within as a web of theological assumptions, thus creating a barrier between us and who God is. Both Luther and Kierkegaard wanted to stress the importance of faith, rather than relying on philosophical dogmas to support personal Christian belief. In other words, take those quotes in historical context. Luther was reacting to a rigid and bloated Catholicism and Kierekegaard was reacting to Hegelian influenced academic theologians. Neither actually negated reason, but wanted to be kept in place next to Revelation, not above it.

LOL

It's true, he really did say that. Not the first time I've heard that quote. I studied him when my major was Early Childhood Education (it was relevant).

That is the basis of modern faith, to be sure.

In the past, faith didn't have so many holes in it. But religious ignorance is glaringly obvious in modern times. In fact, I'm genuinely amazed that ANYONE still believes any of that stuff. Amazed... and disappointed....
