My heart goes out to u because I think we all have an in law just like that! God knows I do! She is extremely rude for requesting something expensive from you or anyone else in the first place. Christmas is about SURPRISES not handing over a big ol list and knowing exactly what u got! Sure we all give eachother lists BUT I ALWAYS buy little things not asked for also! Whatever you chose for her is just fine and if she acts all stupid about it- she is the one who looks bad and like a hateful ol thing! Just smile and say Ummmm this gift was chosen just for you I hope u like it. If she acts hateful once she opens it- you can either go with my husbands advice and tell her to kiss your butt! Or just simply smile and say- they were out of most things I knew u wanted so I chose this for you instead". I know its hard to bite your tongue- trust me! Been there done that! The one time I did follow my hubby's advice it caused so many problems it just wasnt worth it! Tell her in PRIVACY such as if u r alone in the kitchen that u dont appreciate her sel;fishness during the holidays and if she doesnt like the gift u will gladly accept it back- then tell her to kiss your butt! Just not in FRONT of others! Merry Christmas and good luck

Bless you!

This is what I do every other year...when I have no choice...

I show up with flowers....a nice arrangement..... loose cut...so then she has to find a vase to put them in...(extra time I don't have to converse with her of-course) However every time someone says how pretty and where did those come from...a smile in my direction....not poison darts....lol the norm by the way.

Kindness....will win

If you're concerned about your gift for her....talk to your Mother in law before Christmas....asking her for ideas about what to get her....if you follow the Mom...you can't go wrong and if her daughter or daughter in law Bit)((*& about it....well she has barked up the wrong tree.

Keep busy while there...helping out....doing this not only keeps you out of trouble...it keeps the bad talk from happening...what can they say....she is clearing and washing and....all ends with a smile.

Best wishes....
or....and do what ever you can to bite that tongue...two wrong don't make a right....and I know that I would rather her be the blame for an arguement or bad experience especially at christmas.
