I try to eat very healthy and rarely eat sweets. I've noticed lately that whenever I eat a large amount of refined sugar (today it was two cookies three hours after a healthy lunch) I feel jittery, light headed, and just plain bad. Could it be because I'm not used to such a sudden spike in blood sugar? It usually lasts about an hour then I'm fine. I've found that eating something with a lot of protein afterwards helps. I'm going to the doctor in January, but I'm curious as to what you all think. TIA

Jackie - Now that you mention it, last week I woke up sweaty and anxious after having a piece of birthday cake. I didn't connect the two.

Since you mentioned that you rarely eat sweets, and then you mention that when you eat a large amount, it makes you jittery? You are consuming large amounts of sugar and you will naturally be jittery. You have given your body a large dose of energy and it has to burn off.

There are three factors involved here:
1. If you react this way to sugar, don't eat sugar, eat protein foods instead. (I love sweets myself but they make me ill because I have Type II diabetes and should not even eat them).
2. You may have beginning signs of diabetes, Type II, not I.
3. You may have hypoglycemia.

Get yourself tested, which you will be doing in January. You will need to have blood work that requires you to be fasting, (for example, no food after 8:30 pm to give a more accurate blood level reading). Okay to drink water. This test is done in the a.m. so you won't get too hungry or shaky. Call your doctor's office back and tell them you want to have a fasting blood test for diabetes before you see the doctor; otherwise, you will end up paying for two visits.

it may be diabetes or a weird side effect after eating healthy and then eating junk food. i recommend that you go to the doctor, or else these symptoms may not last only an hour, but even more. or even the symptons you have been getting may worsen. it is better safe than sorry, because this does not sound like the usually thing. the most important thing to have checked would be if you have pre-diabetes and have the doctor check your blood pressure, and level of sugar that you have. i hope everything goes well until January.

You may have hypoglycemia, your body can't process refined sugars well. It spikes and then drops very suddenly making you very weak and disoriented. When this happens after you fall asleep you wake up with nightmares and sweating. Eat small amounts every few hours and avoid sugar. Peanut butter is a good "leveler" of blood sugar.
