(Isn't it frustrating, sad and pathetic?)
It's all because of our patriarchal society my dear.
(I love men don't get me wrong but...)
Majority of guys I know seem to live through the games other men play and pay outrageous amounts of money on electronics (TVs) and for tickets to watch this activity.
Would these same men dish out that kind of coin to support school programs or purchase educational tools or anything involving the betterment of the school environment?? Highly unlikely.
Most of these guys had a tough time in class... so this breeds feelings of resentment, dissatisfaction and a lack of respect towards teachers....Have decades of that and look what happens.
It's much easier to be entertained by a game than it is to learn something new, teach your kids something valuable for life or listen to someone smarter than you trying to open your eyes to the world.
Teachers aren't what they used to be either, neither is the curriculum.... I feel sorry for the next generations of students.
I often wonder if my personal feelings about this would change if these athletes would try to help society more than just having a PSA (public service announcement) about "Don't do drugs." or "Stay in school."...perhaps I don't hear this news, just the ones that so and so cheated on his wife or beat up someone or caught doing steroids etc...
What are you gonna do... I blame it on patriarchy and the left brain dominance in our society.
Thanks for the opportunity to vent!

The thing is teachers dont bring in the money that athletes do. The money they bring in parallels their payment. I'm not saying that this is right at all but i don't think we can raise the price of education anymore then it is and so teachers can only make so much. Athletes just get paid a lot because a big stadium equals plenty of sales plus merchandise and sponsors.

First of all this is America and everyone should be able to make as much money as they possibly can or should I say people should be allowed to earn as much money as one is willing to pay! All public school teachers are paid by the government and athletes are not. I believe that education should be run as a business and not by the unions that represent them. In business bad employees are booted out and you get raises and bonuses based on your performance and production. In education bad teachers do not get booted out nor do they get raises and bonuses based on their performance. The unions would never allow one teacher to make more than another, so the slackers can continue to slack and the over achieving teachers get nothing extra. There is no incentive for a great teacher to go the extra mile for her class. Get Government out of teaching and teachers would be able to make more money. I may have gone off topic, but hopefully you see my point.

It's just supply and demand. Almost anyone can be a teacher if they want (I am, my sister is, my brother is, etc), but very few can become pro athletes. Sports is entertainment, and Americans pay to be entertained.
The government (i.e. us taxpayers) couldn't afford to pay teachers that much anyway; otherwise it would go broke and all the schools would close, then there would be no teachers left at all :) The more you pay teachers, the fewer schools want to hire, and if you paid them too much, schools would be firing half their teachers and education would be destroyed.

In my entire life I have not found any situation, issue, or other element of our society that could not be categorized as; "The Bottom Line is Buck$". Sad but true, sports is a high dollar money maker and the better you are at it the more money you make. Also sad but true, real dedicated teachers are not teaching just for the money. School administrators know this and use it to manipulate situations of need to get those special teachers to do more, and more, and more.......

Well teachers chose their profession. Over all they have the lowest test scores of any other major both in applying to colleges and test scores. They are so bad in math they are unaware they are paid for several months while they do not "teach". Athletes are chosen for their abilities. Athletes must do well to keep their jobs. Teachers use tenure.

Unfortunately, it's simple economics. Athletes entertain us and we pay to see them perform. As a result they bring in more money for their employers than teachers do. Therefore they get paid more. I don't like it, but I accept it.
I don't pay to go to sporting events, so at least I'm not contributing to their paychecks in any way.

because we as a society have our priorities backwards!
i don't think that the athletes are proper role models because most of them are getting into trouble with drugs/alcohol and other crimes that the youth of America doesn't need to see.
I'm lucky because my children don't think much about the athletes and look up to their teachers.
