Once he gets out it's nearly impossible to get him back in. Is there anything I can do to keep him from running out whenever a door is opened?

As others have said, he probably was an outside cat. And, it's natural instinct for cats to go outdoors. The good news is that you CAN train him out of it. All you have to do is keep him from ducking past you for a few weeks (months, if he's older) and soon enough he'll lose the desire to go outside completely.

Easy way to keep him away from the door when you're heading out is to keep a CLEAN spray bottle with water in it. He heads at the door, you give him a quick spritz, and he backs off because cats HATE water. Some cats are afraid of spray cans (such as air freshener) and just the noise of spraying that into the air (never at the cat, naturally, unless you're using the plain water spray) will frighten them into backing away.

Basically find a noise or action that your cat doesn't like, and use it as a deterrant if he's nearby when you're going out. And, never leave the door open for long periods, even after he's become accustomed to staying indoors -- cats are naturally very curious and will head out eventually!

If people are not going in and out of the house all day the "double door" technique if the best for now. He goes in a room behind a closed door and then you can go out and in without worry.

You can also have someone on the other side of the door to scare the cat from going near the door. Try a spray bottle, a coffee can with coins (or any other loud noise you can think up). Hopefully you can give him an aversion to going near the door.
If someone else is in the house they can pick the cat up when you have to use the door.

I hope maybe one of these suggestions might help you or stimulate you to be creative in solving this problem. Since I don't know your home situation I can't be more specific.

He may have been an outdoor cat, which I wish people would not do. If you do not want him going out the door fill a can half way with coins and everytime you go near the front or back doors shake it really loud to put him off. Eventually you wont have to worry about him running past you and getting outside.

a million. specific!! Take a e book, homework (in case you're taking summer college), costs, arts and crafts, watch television or a action picture (if there's a television and DVD participant in there), and so on. with you to the room and spend time together with her. 2. As for protecting the door open, i'm not precisely specific. i'm style of divided between allowing her to stroll around, and between giving her a minimum of an afternoon (or some). My cat (and a few different fosters) adjusted good away, and that i had 2 foster cats who did not. provide her it gradual. as quickly as she starts off coming to you, puppy her, play together with her, provide her treats. do not made a surprising pass and seize her, as which will scare her. i might additionally convey treats and talk together with her. grew to become into she spayed those days? You reported she grew to become into from a preserve, so i assume she grew to become into spayed a protracted time in the past, yet while that's been interior the previous day or 2, she ought to nevertheless be drugged up from surgical operation, and that ought to be the explanation she's hiding (or one in all them, although the hot place is a vast adjustment for her). I had a foster cat that grew to become into approximately 3 or 4, and he or she grew to become into spayed around that ingredient, so I figured I shouldn't assume she grew to become into fastened a protracted time in the past. nevertheless, i've got faith the hot environment and alter is what's scaring her, regardless of if she grew to become into spayed interior the previous day or 2. finally, hats off to you for adopting an person cat. that's greater stable for a 5-twelve months previous in a preserve to locate a house than for a kitten, so i'm delighted she went to a stable abode.

I don't think you should worry to much, he'll probebly adapt. But since you got him from the shelter hes probebly really afraid of things he's not used to yet. Just try to give him a lot of love and attention to get him settled whenever you can.
