Nascar became a sport in 1948. But as for it not being a sport-you are wrong. Like the other posters said try sitting in a hot car for four hours at speeds of 180-190 mph. It's not easy. It is legit. Basketball players and football players make millions for nothing but throwing a ball around. So why shouldn't auto racing in general not be considered a sport? Is it because you don't understand it. Ask me any question about NASCAR, and I can try to answer it for you. I know all of the NASCAR drivers so I can always find an answer.

It's a sport of stamina. To race 400-500 miles about 4 hours which takes the average person 12 hours. At speeds of 180 + mph. Bumper to bumper with an average temp in the car at over 100 degrees. The average racer loses over 4 lbs per race. This is nuts. It the most dangerous sport. More people die racing than any other sport. It looks glamorous, but when you think what they go through it's not. The concentration needed is crazy.
The funny thing is when a football player doesn't concentrate they drop the ball. When a NASCAR racer doesn't concentrate his car wipers out into a wall or car at 180+ mph flips, spins and he endangers his life and those around him. NASAR is probably a more cerebral (Brain, thinking man) sport. Why because there is a lot of engineering, Physics that really will determine which car is best.
I enjoy all sports with football as my favorite. You could almost say the same about golf. Is a golfer really playing his opponent or his he really against the Golf course? Nascar you against the opponent and the track, and weather etc.. FYI I live in the North and Nascar is huge up here in Ohio. You'll need to watch as many races as you can Talledaga is a Must. It is bumber-2-bumper for 4 hours at 195+mph and a lot of bumbing. Listen to the commentator on TV. They really break everything down for you during the race. Pit now or later? DO I take 2 or 4 tires? Do I come in a fill up only? How much do I adjust the car so I can stay in my turns tighter? How fast is your pit stop. 14.1 or 15. Who can I draft with? Who will draft with me? These are just some of the points you need to watch out for when watching a race. Because it will determine who wins and who loses. And Don't fear if your guy is in 23rd place. Like I used to do. Anymore these guy's can get back to top 10 in under 10 laps which is fast at those speeds. Give it a chance and listen. JIm Rome used to crack on Nascar. Not anymore. In fact he has the guy's on his show now.

NASCAR is the best and most entertaining SPORT in the world!!! I guarentee you that any one driver has a bigger fan base than a whole football team. To be ignorant enough to ask this question, you must not know a single thing about NASCAR. If you did, then you would know that the average race lasts about 4 hours and consists of over 200 laps, plus the speed and force of the cars is almost unbearable to the drivers. I'd like to see the look on a professional basketball player's face when he steps out of a car that he has been going over 180 mph for 4 hours straight! It would be the hardest thing they had ever experienced. So until you get your facts straight and your brain fixed don't go trashing a well loved and respected sport.

Yea well you must know the feeling. They work extremely hard physically, mentally and to be able to drive these cars is something you'll never do, so you can't say that it is not a sport. And NASCAR became a sport long before there we alot of what we call Sports today think about it! Snowboarding a sport? Come on!

how much muscle and strength do you think it takes to turn the wheel and keep the cars going at upwards of 200mph for hours on end? besides working out, they need brains, quick reflexes and stamina. what part of that is not a sport? oh yeah, i guess it might be hard to compare it to "sports" that either throw, hit or chase a ball around, wiwth no brains involved.
