No, a five-year-old should not be watching a two year old unless they were in the house playing and the mom went to the bathroom. I would never leave my five year old alone outside with either of his younger brothers.

Five years old is way too young to be watching over himself, let alone another baby. No matter how safe the neighborhood is - the problems are going to be with what happens within the household where the two children are left alone. I'd call social services on them, she's putting the lives of those two kids at risk.

Look, my kids are 10 and 7 and I just this fall started letting them play out front without ME sitting outside watching them. We live in a nice, quiet suburb, good neighbors, etc. Other parents and my hubby and I trade off watching the kids on bikes and scooters. No one out there is younger than 6.
Even when it's not my turn, I have the storm/screen door open, I can see them and hear them when I'm in most of the house.
5 and 2 yo should be adult supervised or inside. End of rant.

I would think not. I have both, a 5 and just turn 3 yr old and I would never leave them outside alone period...that's just me. Too many things can happen in an instant even when I'm present so I can only imagine. But when we're in the house and I run out to get the mail and hop in the shower I do say to my son " keep an eye on your sister" .

No. A 5 year old cannot reason enough to keep an eye on a 2 year old every second. They'll get busy playing and forget. And most importantly, a parent should never pass of their responsibility to a 5 year old child. That is shoddy parenting.

It's about as proper and safe as asking the cat to watch the goldfish. I'm glad you think it's not because I was wondering how anyone could think so. The woman who did that is wrong.

Absolutely not. A five year is not responsible enough. A five year old needs to be watched. If I knew someone who did this, I would call Social Services on them. It would be too late if something happened to one of them.

Never, ever, should a five year old be left in charge of a two year old. Contact the authorities if this happens again.

HELL NO! a five year old kid is not responsible enough to watch out for a two year old... whos gonna stop which one from running out int he road? what if the 5 yr old gets distracted and the two year old runs out intot he street and gets hit by a car? you think theyre gonna go after the 5 yr old? HELL NO...theyll go after mommy or daddy or whoever was supposed to be watching BOTH of them. THATS JUTS F'D UP
if ur outside and ur watering you r plants or something and youa sk ur kid to watch the other one..thats one thing, but if youre too lazy to go outside to watch your kids., or you leave them alone inside the house for any longer than going ot get the mail... no..i would kill someone for lettin my kids go outside and play b y themselve and telling the 5 yr old to watch his 2 yr old sibling

I do not think that is safe. It should not be their responsibility. If that is something that happens all the time later in life that child will have problems. I used to always have to take care of my little sister and I hated her for it even though it was not her fault. We are best friends now though.
