INH, or isoniazid, is used alone when one has been diagnosed as having a 'latent' TB infection. It is used in combination with other drugs for active TB.

INH and the other drugs (Rif, Eth,) rid the body of TB relatively slowly. INH in particular has a short half-life in the body, which is why it is very important to take it EVERY DAY or one's risk of the TB not being eradicated is higher. Latent TB means there isn't an active disease yet but you have some amount of TB in the body and INH is used to try to kill it all off before it can grow into active TB.
