I am assuming you mean the spinal cord rather than the vertebral bodies. In that case:

Modulation of reflex arcs
Afferent signal pathways (taking information to the brain)
Efferent signal pathways (sending signals from brain to the body)
Autonomic control and regulation

Lets see here, some functions of the vertebral column are to protect the spinal cord, provide skeletal support for the rest of your body, provide a place for skeletal muscles to adhere and cant think of anything else. If you wanted to know the evolutionary advantages of having a spinal cord I don't remember those.
