If you are not ready for heaven when you die it is quite possible there are other steps but this is just opinion. C.S. Lewis has a book that has the word pain in it's title which is about this subject and from what I understand of you, I think you would really like it, another of his which I liked was Mere Christianity but I don't think your ready for that one yet, not that you are not perfectly capable of understanding it from your current perspective but what I think is if you read it now you might very well want to read it again in the future and well why do something twice?

If you make it to heaven, you will never want to leave! if you do then you are hypocrite, but when you see that you won't make it heaven because you didn't believe in God alone and all of his messengers (Islamic Monotheism), then you will wish that you could go back to Earth and change your deeds, but by then it will be too late.
[004:173] So, as for those who believed (in the Oneness of God РIsl̢mic Monotheism) and did deeds of righteousness, He will give them their (due) rewards Рand more out of His bounty. But as for those who refused His worship and were proud, He will punish them with a painful torment. And they will not find for themselves besides God any protector or helper.
[004:174] O mankind! Verily, there has come to you a convincing proof (Prophet Muhammad [Peace Be Unto Him]) from your Lord; and We sent down to you a manifest light (this Qur'ân).

Once you die and you believe in a God you are trapped forever. There is no changing your mind! Your choice must be made her with only the information we have about this God!
NOTE: The bible God is a brutal child murderer!

good question. my guess is no. if there is no sadness or sin in heaven that means there is no free will. (which makes me wonder how lucifer rebelled, "sinned" while he was in heaven, and then got cast down)
