DOGS SEE IN BLACK AND WHITE. MAYBE YOUR DOG WAS DISTRACTED AND DIDNT SEE THE WATER.
i WASN'T THERE AND DONT KNOW HOW OLD YOUR DOG IS AND WHETHER ITS BEEN IN WATER BEFORE.
I am a dog lover and would never say that its okay to throw your dog in a lake and it'll find it's way out. I would say that you need some family or friends to help you put this situation into perspective and make you certain of your dogs abilities.
remember-most dogs have an instinct and ability to swim- this does not mean that the second they hit the water THEY CAN.
They learn within seconds because of an inbuilt desire to survive.
The benefit of finding this out for yourself in A SAFE AND PREPARED ENVIRONMENT can lead to a better life for you and your dog.
Immerse yourself in water to a depth where your dog cannot touch the bottom and you would be able to save the dog should it have need and coax it in- to do this with the presence of friends or family will give the dog extra confidence too as it will know
that this is not a torture or something unnatural.
IF AT THE END OF THE DAY YOU FIND THE ONE DOG IN A MILLION-THAT CAN'T SWIM- LOVE HIM FOR WHO HE IS AND KEEP HIM AWAY FROM WATER IF AT ALL POSSIBLE.
DOGS DO THINGS TO PLEASE AND CAN BE HASTY IN THEIR OWN DECISIONS ESPECIALLY WHEN YOUNG- MAYBE IT WAS JUST EXCITEMENT CLOUDING ITS VISION OR INEXPERIENCE OF ALGAE.
DOGS IN MY OPINION ARE DEFINATELY NOT COLOUR BLIND-TO SEE IN BLACK AND WHITE-(IN MY OPINION ) IS NOT BEING COLOUR BLIND IF YOU SEEK A PROPER DESCRIPTION OF WHAT COLOUR BLINDNESS IS YOU'LL FIND I'M NOT WRONG.

Dogs are not colour blind. They do see colour, but not on the same scale as humans. It is a little darker than our vision.
He must have thought it was a grassy patch when he saw the algae covered water.

your dog probably never went to school and learnt what algae is. so it just saw a flat surface. dogs learn by doing or through copying other dogs, mother or owner.
They see colour, but its more of a black white and red contrast. thats how they can pick up different coloured items in displays etc..
