...due to drug addiction, mental illness, etc. Let's just relegate it to the really severe cases, i.e the people who won't stop pooping out babies even though they don't have the means, ability or desire to care for children.

I believe that there are people who should be sterilized, especially if they have a long history of neglect, abuse, etc, however, who is qualified to make this kind of decision? Would there be abuse of this power?
I totally see where you are coming from here, people need to stop reproducing, the planet can't support us all for much longer. And if you can't even afford or care for your own children, you are burdening ALL of us.

No, who are we to judge who can and cannot have children. I work for a psychiatrist and I see these people come in who are crazy... no doubt about it, but have these amazing children who are well taken care of, happy and intelligent and far more open minded than this question. Why in the world would we want to stop these children from coming into the world? As for the people that have no desire to care for their children, I think that we should make adoption more available to them so that their children can have a chance to go into a happy home, and maybe delegate more people to work in child services, doing in home checks on new parents for the first year to look out for the child's best interests. There are so many options that we have that we're not exercising that are so much better than mandatory sterilization.

By the way, I was a drug addict for 6 years, I started doing crystal meth when I was 13 years old, and upgraded to heroine when I was 17, I did a year in prison for drug related crimes... when I got out, I changed my life, and I now have a career and am going to college like everybody else my age and I also have a 9 month old daughter who is very happy and well taken care of. Looking at me and my daughter you would have no way of knowing my past and most of the time people don't believe me when I tell them. I would be miserable if I had been forced to be sterilized and never had the chance to be the mother that I am today, and because of that, chances are that I would've acted out even worse. Taking away the dreams of people doesn't help anything, it only will make matters worse.

If the parents are actually mentally disabled or it doesn't seem they'll kick the addiction, then yes. I work in a level 14 (worst) group home and all of the kids there are products of these types of parents. It's unfair and downright sickening that someone would bring a child into this world who is already addicted to drugs and born with disabilities AND/OR abused by jacked up parents. I don't buy into any other BS about sterilization for people with no money or even responsibility, if a child is born normal, they have a chance to make it. If someone is going to bring an innocent child into this world with NO chance of living a normal life...yes, they should be sterilized.

My husband works for the state and just had to remove a child from a home where the parents are mentally retarded. It hurts me very much to know this has to be done but no, that is not our place to forcibly sterilize people. I asked him weren't there some agency who could help the whole family and leave the baby with them. He said no, no funds. Everyone is in a terrible position in our area. Katrina exacerbated poverty.

No. I believe it would be beneficial to offer government sponsored free sterilization to women and men like you have described above. I would imagine a large percent would want this as an informed choice. Just because you have problems doesn't mean that government gets to take away god given rights. Some of the greatest people ever overcame bad up bringings.

what happens when they mature and become fit?
are u going to unsteralize them?

as for the ones who keep having kids i would have to say the states need to keep an eye on this and start gettin cps involved, and put the parents away for neglegance.

i was told the other day, that this kid has 11 brothers/sisters, oldest of them is 16, and the mom is pregnant again. the mom doesnt work, (my guess is she has kids to keep from working), so they 12 kids, soon to be 13, are living under 1 income. infact some of the kids they had at home so they arent even registered citizens. i think this guy and lady should be taken away.

The problem becomes, what if one of those potential babies is the next Einstein or Mother Theresa or something...

Also, who actually decides where to draw the line? And, with such people making decisions, it could become another witch hunt as it comes down to bias as to whether or not they allow you to have children.

In theory, it sounds good...but it is an extremely slippery slope as it will start with druggies and the truly unfit parents...then it will slowly creep into suspected druggies and people the decision makers don't like because of political or religious ideals.

No. Because that puts the control of your body in someone else's hands without your consent.

I would agree with offering VOLUNTARY sterilization at a reduced price (or even in trade for goods) for those who CHOSE to, however.

Im with alighier. Offer up a gram of dope for a sterilization. That would put a huge dent in the cycle.

I'm down with that. Take it a little further...cruise the crackhouses and offer the junkies a few rocks to be voluntarily sterilized.
