The BEST way would be university. But,if you are like me and dont want to go that route I suggest books!

Diffrent books will teach diffrently, some of them say Doozo is please, other say it means go ahead. etc.

So compare, I have many diffrent books on learning Japanese. get a Japanese/English dictionary too!

I have one that comes with a cd so you can learn how to pronounce things....and just like learning any other language you should probably watch movies/tv shows/ anime in japanese language. Gives you a good idea on pronounciation, and context.

learning a language is great but I would suggest learning about the culture too. I have many japanese culture books, and then you can learn where some of the words originated, and somtimes what they originally meant.

(heian period is one of my fave periods in japanese history)

so books, cds, movies, music.

Movies and software. My sister and I were learning Japanese with a certain computer game, but unfortunately I've forgotten the name of it. My Japanese friend learns a lot by watching movies (anime). I recommend those directed by Hayao Miyazaki. (:

Well... dumb answer, but the absolute best way would be to be born in Japan.

As a foreigner, it depends on your learning style, but on a general basis, people learn first to distinguish, then to repeat and then to create. This means that first you need to train your ear, so audio learning would be your ideal first step. Secondly, I would take some classes to practice accent and finally -if you are so inclined- go to the tricky part of learning grammar and such on more formal courses.

Good luck!

Go there! I've seen so many Japanese films, like "Ran" and the series "Zatoichi" and even "Kill Bill" and all I remember is that "Oligato" means...something! Also, "Ichi", is pronounced (by women anyway, "Its-uh"....
