I'm looking to visit the big apple for the first time and stay for 3-4 days, specifically in Manhattan.

On this trip I am looking to have a private room for myself. I've stayed at some hostels before where we shared bath AND rooms, there were multiple people in each room. Is that the way with these hostels?

Craigslist temporary room or apartment rentals:
Manhattan:
http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/sub/
You get much better value if you get a temp rental in Queens or Brooklyn on the subway line and take the subway in to Manhattan.
Queens:

Brooklyn:
http://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/sub/
If you want a hotel in the middle of Times Square for under $100 night, here's Hotel Carter:

Warning: Hotel Carter is not always clean and you may have to clean your own room. It's also noisy.
For more specific answers to you question, repost it on the message board "Wired New York," the Q&A section. They know everything about Manhattan:

I've lived in New York all my life and NO hotel is cheap in Manhattan. If you're looking to go very inexpensive, but have some privacy and convenience, I'd recommend subletting an apartment for a few days. Right now, there's a listing on Craigslist.org for a 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment in Gramercy Park, right in Midtown Manhattan, for only $150 for 6 days. That's unbelieveably cheap!
There's also a flophouse on the Bowery, right by the Bleeker Street subway stop, that rents individual rooms for very little cost per night, but you have to share a bathroom. If you're interested, email me and I'll find the name for you. It's on the seedy side, though.
Good Luck!

How cheap? Manhattan is like one of the most expensive cities in the world.. so you may wanna try a hostel instead of a hotel. Hostels run like $30 a night... try the Gershwin Hotel on 7 E 27th St. their dorm hostels are pretty decent... otherwise go to www.hotels.com

There are hostels, where you have to share a bath, if that is ok w/ you. Otherwise check tripadvisor.com, where they list all hotels and rates, or travelzoo.com. If you go onto Hotwire.com or priceline.com, you can name your price for hotel in a specific area and star rating ( I used it for LA, saved $50 a night and New Orleans, saved about $100 per night). The cheapest decent hotel in NYC that I have stayed was $159 booked months in advance; it's now 50% more if I booked today.

hotel carter is where my friends stay when they come to the city because its a great price and it is in times square.
it has big beds and your own private bath.
extra towels and sheets/toiletry are provided free of charge in the lobby every day. because they only make up your room 1 time for a 4 day stay.
welcome to new york !! you will love it in the big apple!!

"Cheap and New York City" just don't belong in the same sentence. As for the other listing 10 hotels under $100.00...take it from me with lots of traveling under my belt. ANY hotel under a $100.00 a night be very wary..........think of what you can get for $100.00 in your own city? Now a days it really isn't to much.
Best of Luck to you, but just remember it is one thing to get reasonable and clean another to get cheap and dirty.....also you get what you pay for in anything in life.
