The power and might of religion has historically been pretty brutal in its endeavours to convert everyone in its path.
But there also has to be a 'story' to back up the brutality and oppression. So the better the story, presumably the more powerful the message.
Note to major religions - come up with a really good story to back up your claims for ownership of 'the truth'. Oh look - they figured this out in The Holy Land already! - they've come up with three completely different good stories, one after the other.
So do they all believe that their con is better than the others?

Happygirl - I didn't invent a religion, but plenty of others did!

Jon C - I wasn't referring to Buddhism, or motor-racing, or poker, or antelopes. That's why my comments weren't relevant to them.

Religion is the ultimate con, it is government protected, tax free and the product they sell doesn't have to be delivered until you reach a place that doesn't exist. No wonder so many people jump on this manured money wagon.

The Catholic church is historically notorious for brutality. Other faiths have followed suit. However, the vast majority of adherents, particularly grassroots adherents to these are not themselves violent with regard to promoting their faith.

Religion is suposed to a power for good, but most people are not being taught this. It's a mess, it's not suposed to be like this.

God has seen all this and promises to do something about it. Revelation, which is a difficult book to understand without being directly taught what it means, shows that religions which claim to be a power for good but are not, will be removed. This will happen just before every other authority of man is removed to be replaced by God's kingsdom.

actually the way i look at religion is:

the easier to follow, the bigger the con. being a perfect christian is out of your reach...the bible even recognizes it. Whereas, in other religions you are expected to reach there level of perfection. Why is this so? Our human nature pulls us toward evil, which is the most easy choice. Our conscience battles the human nature. Christian values and human conscience are actually in alignment, which is why its values are out of our reach.

No, by your own statement regarding ownership of the truth, only two believe their con is better. The other one always believes they have the truth.

totally agree with this and the sooner the masses realise that there is no god and stop using religion as an excuse for extortion.terror.etc the sooner this world will be better place.
As for Buddhism this more of a philosophy than a religion

The perversion of religion for people's own selfish pursuits has been the con. Nothing they have done has been for the one they claim to serve. If it isn't spawned from love then it is not from God. In my bible it says they will be judged more harshly. That is truly using His name in vain.
But yes organized religion has caused many horrible incidents. But should not be confused with loving God.

The con is the mind which Atheists rely upon. The TRUTH is the cause a true religion seeks to find.

Without mind, there is no con. Evil comes only from the mind. A true religion teaches how to free ourselves from the evil thoughts.

Maybe we should say, "The bigger the religion, the bigger the collection-plate to fill."
