No, you don't need to delete your personal files from your hard disk drive. How much you have on your hard disk does not affect the speed of the computer, apart from when it comes to something called "file fragmentation". Running a "defrag" can help with this problem, and you should defrag once a week.
Most likely your computer is freezing up bec ause you are running Microsoft Windows, and it has developed a problem.
It could be a hardware problem, but this is ususally a "last case" scenario.
Microsoft Windows is very insecure, and if you don't know a lot about how to use Microsoft Windows, then the chances are you're been bitten by some "malware".
Download Superantispyware:

and run a check.

Your hard drive space does not make a difference in the speed of your computer unless you only have less than a gigabyte or so left. It is most likely a RAM upgrade that you need. Before you waste your time doing that, do a few scans on your computer.
Make sure you have proper antivirus protection. I recommend TrendMicro (www.trendmicro.com). Make sure your antivirus is installed and updated. Do a virus scan. Then, go to www.trendmicro.com and perform their free online virus/spyware scan. Remove anything it finds. If it finds something, reboot your computer and scan again. Keep doing that until your computer comes up clean. At that point, your computer should run faster. Make sure you get a proper antivirus/spyware protection software suite installed. Make sure it is set to automatically update and automatically perform a weekly or even a daily scan.
If your computer comes up clean after doing all of this, you need a RAM upgrade. Talk to your computer manufacturer about what you need. It is easy to install once you get the proper type of RAM.
Oh, and a lot of people here are telling you to go to msconfig and uncheck certain things. If you do not know what you are looking at and have any uncertainty about it... do NOT touch msconfig. You can do more harm than good if you don't know what you are looking at.
Hope this helps.

The problem with the freezing computer suggests that you could be having a problem with windows itself, or the computer hardware could be failing. Unfortunately, a freezing computer has many different things that can cause that symptom. Unfortunately just saying it is a "memory problem" is not a very specific cause, even though it is one of the more common ones.
I would take it to a PC Technician (not the kid around the corner, but a professional one from a reputable shop) and see what diagnostics might reveal. You might be surprised that you don't have to remove anything after all!

How much memory do you have on your computer 512 or 1gb? I would save some or all of those pictures to dvd before you lose them if you computer finally crashed you may just need to do a system check and defrag your computer. Go to my computer and right click on your main hard drive and click properties and you can do both test from there. Scan disc must do after reboot.

It's a memory problem, not a hard disk space problem. There are probably too many things running in the background. Try pressing the Windows key and R, type in "msconfig" and go to the "startup" tab. This is everything running in the background when you boot up.
