load up on vitamin C
drink plenty of fluids
go to gnc and get this plant extract called umka, its like 8 bucks but well worth it since it cuts colds in half, and also if you take it at the first sign of a cold, you will barely experience the virus! at least that's what it does for me :)

I'm a teacher, so I feel many colds trying to get a grip every year. At the first signs (sore throat, aches), I start drinking Airborne twice a day.
1. Airborne: a dissolvable tablet that you drop in a glass of water... various flavors. (Available at almost any store, including Trader Joes, and other drug stores or supermarkets) It includes a huge amount of Vitamin C to boost your immune system. Although it won't "stop" the cold, it will greatly reduce the length and symptoms.
2. Vitamin C pills
3. Echinacea tea

I've tried the nasal zinc stuff. It might work. I couldn't tell.
When I was in Tech School, I drank 2-3 cans of Hawaiian Punch a night. Each can had lots of Vitamin C in it. Most everybody in my class got strep throat, but I didn't.

Vitamin C and garlic, and hot liquids of any sort. That might not stop the cold from coming, but it will make it less severe.
Good luck!

My mom always made us beef up on Vitamin C, and I still do it today (many many years later ;) ). Seemed to work though, the colds were short and infrequent. Good luck! :)
