I guess it just depends on what kind of place you are at. Its impressive if you know a lot about what you are drinking, where the wine is made, the location of the brewery where the beer was made. Its impressive to have a different or unique drink too, not just Miller Lite or something common like that. I would also say that moderation is key. Being drunk isn't impressive. Knowing something about your drink could be a good icebreaker too....

The best way to impress ladies in a drinking setting is to be nice, respectful, and gentlemanly towards them, not slobber all over them like a hungry wolf.
However, if I was to suggest a drink, it would be either sort of a martini, either vodka or gin, depending on what you prefer. You don't really see that many people drinking them, and they carry that sophisticated ambience, probably because of James Bond.
On the flip side, I am wary of men who have an affinity for whiskey, no matter if it's Bourbon, Canadian, Scotch, whatever. In my experience of it (too much, I'm afraid) it has a tendency to make people more likely to be irritable, mean and nasty.

Dude, if a woman is impressed by your drink or the sight of you drinking she is either a little girl or lush. Flip it man... try a bottle of water. The reason I say this is when I go to a bar, there are always a couple guys who have a bottled water and the women seem to flock to them. Not sure why but can guess it promotes a healthy, stable, responsible image... and many (not all) woman look for those qualities in a man.

If you are a man, drinking in front of ladies, you have four choices.
1. Drink beer (preferably not a light beer)
2. Drink a Martini
3. Drink a girlie drink and play it off as a joke
4. Drink something straight up
Use option 4. When the girl asks how you can drink something straight, just smile and act manly. : )

Drinking won't impress the ladies. Personality and attractiveness will. If you want NOT to impress the ladies, however, pick sissy drinks like grasshoppers, sangria, strawberry daquiries.

Definetly a non-alcoholic beverage. A responsible adult in a bevy of drinkers who is the designated driver would be my choice.
On a side note, anyone who is looking to impress is not impressive.

If you're talkng alcoholic, I'd say none. You don't have to drink beer or anything to impress. Drink some water, it's good for you. But I must admit, if you know how to drink ( drink alot, but not get drunk or puke), then that's kinda impressive.
