I think it is a great time. The first Dachshund that I bought was at Christmas time for my wife ( then fiancee). She absolutely loved our Doc! I think Puppies and Kittens are in the top 10 Christmas presents.

The only drawback is for the buyer - a little harder to housebreak a dog during the winter. You have to clear snow to make a spot in the grass. Those pups (especially dachshunds) have a hard time sometimes withstanding the cold long enough to go!

Either way, I would definitely sell.
Just make sure they are old enough to be separated from their mom. Most say 8 wks.

I would love too since I have seven little monsters that need a home. However; most puppies adopted at christmas are returned in the spring and summer and the reason for their return is usually the dumbest cr@p you have ever heard. They are going on vacation since the kids are out of school. Its chewing on things.

People that give puppies for christmas do not realize the work involved. Once they are no longer cute and little they are done with them. Its horrible!!! No one should ever give an animal to someone as a gift. Take the person to pick one after there has been consideration into the fact it is a life and not like other christmas present you can shove in a closet.

I have another week before I can get any of mine altered and I plan on adopting to those that have already put in an application and have given it thought.

However again. Grant county shelter had 22 puppies that were going to die. We got a bunch of them out with another rescue and vetted so they will be up for adoption this week and we will deal with them when returned but it beat death. And some may get wonderful loving homes.

NEVER ADOPT PETS AROUND A HOLIDAY. Shelters wont' do it and neither will reputable breeders ever do this. Holidays are very stressful for pets and people. Its never a good idea to bring in a new pet because the pet will be very overwhelmed, new home, new people and more then likely will regress and hide or escape out of the house. If you adopt now, the kitten will be much better adjusted by Christmas and more confident with things (tho you still need to be careful). I would plan on adopting a kitten about 3-4 months old now and have it spayed/neutered so everything is more settled by Christmas. You and more important, the kitten, will be a lot happier!

No, from my experience everyone wants Christmas puppies and kittens, and then a few months after Christmas the novelty wears off. They go on to something new. Most of these animals end up neglected, abused or abandoned. If you have puppies or kittens up for adoption, take the time to screen the people looking to adopt and make sure they are commited to at least 15 years of pet care.

I typically would not suggest it. Its like selling bunnies at Easter. A lot of people but pets on impulse as a gift for someone that is not welcome. If you do make sure that they are not GIVING them as gifts because there is a good chance that they might end up in a shelter if the reciever is not up to the challenge of a puppy. Also make sure to have a "contract" with the buyers that says they will contact YOU before sending it to a shelter where they might be put down.

I wouldn't SELL or give away any animal, during the holiday season, because they are usually wanted as a gift for someone else, and there's no way of knowing if that person will truly adore the animal, or get tired of it a week later.
As for adopting, the rescue I volunteer with, does do adoptions, but we do not allow them to adopt for someone else. If any mentioning of ''as a gift'' or ''as a surprise'' comes up, we tell them ''No, sorry. The potential owner has to be here to agree to this animal."

Yes- Only with a contract and contact information to check back after the holidays to see how things are going. Surprise gifts are a bad idea, I would make sure that the adults in the house agree that they want the pet, not just one person thinking it is a good idea when they are not going to be the one home most of the time to raise and train the baby.

I know that a lot of people don't because people want to give them as presents. Unless you are the parent and you are very prepared for the commitment that comes with having a pet, giving a pet at Christmas is not a good idea. You never know if the person is ready for the responsibility, and many people get wrapped up in giving the cutest gift and forget everything that comes with it.

No way , because people do not have the time to spend with them,, Tell them to wait to pick the puppy after the holidays when things calm down....Plus with all the christmas stuff for the puppy to get into it could turn deadly for the puppy Linda
