What does it mean when someone asks "are you in so cal? " And why do they call it that ... thankz!

No idea. I would never say something like that as it does not make sense. Unless by cal you mean call.

Southern California - I believe there are companies that call themselves So Cal "whatever" like Sol Cal Gas (the gas company)

It's just something Californians use to abbreviate the area they live in. Southern California isn't a state, just an area of California.
