About 2 weeks ago I got a ticket for doing 65 in a 45 on a parkway type road in Georgia. I'm 17, this is my first offense, and I'd really rather this not go on my driving record. A few people have suggested pleading nolo contendre at court on my court date, including the officer who gave me the ticket in order to avoid getting points on my license. Will that take the points off my license? Will I also have to pay the fine? I don't think the fine is really a life altering addition (even though it's a terrible $158) but my biggest worry is getting any points on my record.

Most communities offer traffic school as an alternative. Once you successfully complete the course, usually 1 or 2 days, they'll dismiss the ticket.

Pleading nolo contendre means you are not contesting it while not admitting guilt. It usually is treated the same as a guilty plea, therefore they will do whatever they do normally if you are found guilty of a ticket.

A nolo plea, while it stops the point, is mostly for use when there is a accident, so you are not found guilty in court, and they can't use the criminal traffic court ruling, to sue you in civil court.

Many courts in GA only allow you to use the NOLO plea once ever so many years. So by using it for a traffic ticket with no accident, next month you may need it for real, and not be abel to use it.

Next of course some times, if you have an attorney, they will let you take a driving school, or do community service to have the charge dropped. Something worth looking into also.

I got a ticket about 2 weeks ago for the same thing in Georgia. (Were you on the East-West connector by any chance.) Anyway, I'm pleading nolo. You're 17, you NEED to plead nolo. If you were going 66, you would have lost your license because you have a teen (provisional) license.

www.nolo.com Nolo Press's "Fight that ticket" may help you understand better.
The officer who gave you the ticket may not have your best interests at heart. Ask your parents if they can get you a lawyer.
The ALL CAPS guy had good advice.
Talk to someone who knows the rules in Georgia - most of us don't.

Ask about taking a defensive driving school to keep this from effecting your insurance. Most areas offer this program, but you have to ask. There will more than likely be a statute to cover this but you have to find out. You can ask the city attorney's office.

ALWAYS PLEAD NOT GUILTY AT FIRST THEN THEY HAVE YOU TALK TO THE PROSECUTOR AND HE GIVES YOU A DEAL THE DEAL I ALWAYS GET IS FAILURE TO OBEY TRAFFIC SIGN OR SIGNAL A LOCAL ORDINANCE THAT CARRIES NO POINTS BUT HAS A HIGHER FINE AND THE COURT LIKES IT BECAUSE A LOCAL ORDINANCE MEANS THE COURT KEEPS ALL OF THE FINE MONEY IN THEIR JURISDICTION AND USSUALLY WITH SPEEDING THE STATE TAKES MOST OF THE FINE $ TRUST ME --NOT GUILTY---THE COP WANTS YOU TO PLEAD SO HE DOESNT HAVE TO COME TO COURT TO TESTIFY AND THE PROSECUTOR WONT WANT TO PULL HIM OFF OF PATROL S THEY WILL MAKE A DEAL!!!!!!

you shouldn't get any points on your record but your insurance premium should go up...if it doesn't consider yourself lucky.
