I volunteer at a homeless shelter. Some of the people there I don't see as employable. They are perfectly willing to do tasks around the shelter when asked but in reality they really aren't functioning at a level that would support themselves. I wouldn't want to live in a world where we left people on the streets to starve and then swept up their rotting bodies. I do think that we as a rich nation should support those who are fallen on hard times but it is reasonable to expect something in return and it shouldn't have to be lifelong support in most cases. I support a system where you combine welfare with getting people independent and also making sure only people who REALLY need it get it. I don't live by the Bible as I am an Atheist, I do have morals and compassion.

I recall reading the scripture you refer to, I think ...

If a man will not work, let him also not eat ... something to that effect ... but ...

Keep in mind the words carefully chosen in scripture so as not to get misled .. in this verse "will"... some people can not possibly feed themselves adequately, and therefore in anyone's own discretion are worthy of the gift of a meal.

When someone gives you a gift, I'm sure it would hurt your feelings for anyone to think you were not worthy of having it.

Also, if we refuse bare necessities to others it leaves people open to being victimized and it's unfortunate that some people can't defend themselves as well as others, so giving food to people is at worst .. still good will, regardless of our intentions.

There's an expression like .. "never bite the hand that feeds you", so how about "feed the hand that might bite you"? If you're aware of bible passages there's one to that effect ... something about .. I won't quote as the exact words won't come .. but ...

be nice to even your enemies as you'll be casting firebrands on their heads ... or something.

I love you, and thank you for asking such a good question.

I know the scripture..."ye who will not work, neither shall ye eat." My boss had it hanging on his wall, and it was a wise comment.

Basically, the early Christians thought Jesus would return in their lifetime. They pooled al their property to support each other until the second coming. As a result, some of them quit working and contributing to the community, either because they were lazy or they were focused only on the 2nd coming. The letter writer (I am not sure which) was warning that they couldn't adopt this practice.

At our homeless shelter, if you could not contribute ANY labor whatsoever, we found a place for you in a hospital or nursing home. Otherwise, you chose not to help out in any way, and we refused you food or shelter.

Well it's in the moral sense, work for your livings.

Why be rewarded for something you don't deserve.

but this is the modern world, not everyone believes christanity, and the bible. They are trying to make this world "politically correct"

also not familiar with that scripture, but love rules and we are not allowed to let our neighbors (as lazy and worthless as they may seem) starve.
