Where would the best place be to stay for sight seeing that wouldnt be expensive?

The best area for sightseeting is Manhattan.

If you stay out near the airport, you will not be near anything, and will have to take the subway into Manhattan each day for anything that you wanted to do.

Once you are in Manhattan, there are lots of options for places to stay that are good for sightseeing. You can stay right in the Times Square area, or further uptown or downtown as the subway and buses make it very easy to get to all the top tourist destinations.

Almost anywhere in the East or West 30's/40's/50's is going to be the most convenient.

You take the shuttle buses that "Famous " suggested because you know up front exactly what it's going to cost. With a cab the cost is a total crap-shoot because you pay for the actual distance driven and you pay for the time stuck in traffic. On that particular trip the often cited 15 minutes only applies to trips that are taken during the week , in good weather between 11:00 PM and 5:30 AM During the rest of the time that trip can take you from 30-60 minutes .....which you're paying for
