well me and my husband never DREAMED of smoking but a year into it we both started lol it was because of the stress, deployments and working all hours of the day and night. I know my husband does it at work so he can have a break away from his office and also to relive stress... hope that helps

Not just soldiers of war, but firefighters, police, EMTs, many construction workers. This category of social behavior falls into what is known as Brower Syndrome. Not a real condition or disease for the record, just a psychological term that happens to cover men who are "gruff" nature, they smoke, curse, behave like typical men - macho, unsensitive, and must, by all means under peer pressure, fit in. Especially in circumstances like this, where it's mostly all guys in infantry divisions and field operations, they are inclined to smoke more so just to feel like they fit in. Of course it's not like that all the time. Many start smoking while in war because they believe it helps relieve stress.

We all don't only about 48% of American Soldiers smoke most had started smoking before entering the Military and some but few had started because of the nerve racking conditions that we face everyday. And some believe that smoking helps with depression caused by missing their loved ones.

Smoking provides some minor relief from the boredom and loneliness of being far from home and sometimes in life threatening situations. Modern militaries run on caffeine and nicotine.

Some do it cause they just generally enjoy it, some out of boredom to help pass time. Some only when they drink. Some to help with stress.

I worried more about lead poisoning than lung cancer when I was deployed besides it settles the nerves a bit.

i joined army at 17year old. started smoking at 21year old. i got discharged in 1988. i was 30year old then. bullits fly n at ya will make ya want a smoke.

Boredom mostly, there’s a lot of down time when in combat. Also, it does tend to settle the nerves a bit.

Mmmmm, it relieves the stress of constantly training, and then when deployed of the thoughts of getting killed.
