My roof is being re-done and there is suet and black powder (I think dried up old tar) all over the ground and she rolled all around in it. She smells like what I assume is roofing tar and her white fur is all grey...what can I do?...She would never let me give her a little cat bath...wouldn't even want to try that one....

Call your local vet and/or groomer for ideas. They will usually help to gain your patronage. Our vet YELLED at me for not bringing my Stimpy in for a check-up. They'll help if you let them. LUCK and Merry Christmas.

I like the damp towel idea. Or even a wet brush that you could use to calmy brush her and remove alot of the soot! If that doesn't work, I'd recommend calling a groomer. Most cities have groomers that will even come to your home to get the job done. It's usually around $20 - $30. A groomer would be better able to handle your cat if she doesn't like being groomed. They can even give her a shot that would put her under while getting the job done.

Good luck!

As Korikill said, a damp towel should do the trick, but if that stuff doesn't come off with just water you may have to use a damp soapy cloth, but make sure you get all the soap off the fur afterwards because whatever is on the fur will be licked and injested by kitty when she grooms herself.

You will probably need to take it to the groomer. You can try that dry shampoo stuff but it is nasty in my opinion. There are cloths you can buy at the pet store to wash your kitty. But my suggestion would be to get some help and just bathe it. It will be a pain in the azz but it will do a better job than any of my other suggestions and it will be free also. Try using a small amount of Dawn as shampoo. But DON'T use human shampoo. You will cause more harm than good.

My WHITE cat rolled in the fireplace ashes one time -- we came home to a BLACK cat and ash footprints all through the house!! I gave her a bath in Dawn dish soap (because the ashes are oily) being careful NOT to get it in her eyes. Then when all the grease was out of her fur, I shampooed her again with baby shampoo. Wrapped her in a towel (to get her dry AND to protect myself from the claws (she was not very happy) - haha) and after a little while let her loose and he licked herself dry. She NEVER went near the fireplace again.

Oh yeah, hold her by the nap of the neck while in the bath -- she will not be able to escape nor claw you.

Pretty hard to give a kitty a bath better have Steel Gloves if you do it yourself.

Taking it to a Groomer might be an Idea...

Always pet kitty gently... and you'll have a friend for life...

Take her to the groomer's. That way you wouldn't have to give her a bath and you won't be the one with the scratches. If you don't want to do that then either shave her (not to the skin, so she still has some fur in the winter) or try to brush it out

you need to get as much of that stuff off as you can.
If you kitty cleans herself, she'll ingest that and it could make her very sick.
Try the wet cloth, but you may have to suck it up and give her a bath.
I wear leather gloves when I bathe my cats, it's safer for me!

I dont have a cat but i know that when my dog gets dirty i just use a damp rag and wipe her down, it mite work for a cat because then she couldnt be getting entirely soaked!! You could even try just brushing her really well, often that works too. Have fun cleaning her up...lol
